Thomas Howard Carpenter
THOMAS HOWARD CARPENTER, Lewes, Del., son of Thomas H. 2, and Catharine F. (Marshall) Carpenter, was born in St. Louis, Mo., August 19, 1866.

The Carpenter family is an old one in Delaware. Tradition has it that the founder of the family here whose name, it is supposed, was James, was landed at Lewes from a British man of war about 1770, on account of a very severe illness, and that he found both renewed health and a wife in Lewes. He had one son, James Carpenter, who was born in Lewes,, May 15, 1775, and married Mary Dean, February 15, 1798.

John,
...
By, the way, I’m writing this from Sussex County and do research here every summer. A couple of weeks ago I visited both the Lewes and Cool Spring presbyterian churches. James Carpenter and Mary Dean are both buried at Lewes Presbyterian. The inscription on the James Carpenter marker reads "Departed this life Jan 7th 1861. Aged 87 Years 7 mos, & 22 days”. The inscription on Mary’s marker reads “SACRED to the memory of MARY CARPENTER consort of James Carpenter who departed this life July 3, 1858 aged 77 years, 4 months and 17 days.

E-MAIL: Tue, 28 Nov 2000 From: sue trimmer <--- New email see below!
Hello John,
Thank you very much for the letter you sent about the Carpenters and
Elizabeth Browne Smith in Jamaica, West Indies.  It had been a bit of a
confusing time locating the family as the informatioin I had retrieved
from the Internet source stated the family connected to Kingston,
Jamaica, N.Y. and since there is both a Kingston and a Jamaica in New
York state, I was totally confused to say the least!!
The family information is great and I really appreciate it as this is a
branch of our family that no-one  on our side has investigated before.
To find it all laid out so beautifully is wonderful!! And to go so far
back - wow!!
Are you interested in having details about Elizabeth at all?  I know it
can all be a bit obscure, but you are welcome to have what info is
available.  It isn't much as more interest was paid to the family she
married into - the Cargill's.  The Cargill's were a founding family of
the southern part of the South Island of New Zealand - the southernmost
city in NZ is named Invercargill.  There are also monuments etc in
Dundedin to Captain William Cargill who was the father of Thomas
Augustus who married Elizabeth.  Anyway, let me know if you want more
info about this family although Elizabeth's life is not well detailed.
Once again, many thanks for the information.
Regards, Sue Trimmer.
p/s Had a peek at your webpage - looks very impressive, but haven't yet
had time to explore properly - look forward to having that pleasure soon
I hope!!

Subject: Carpenters in common
Hi John It has been a lot of years since I last wrote to you about investigating my connection with the Carpenter clan. I have now retired so there are no longer any excuses!!! My connection is through Elizabeth Browne Smith, daughter of Hannah Carpenter who married Thomas Augustus Cargill in 1840 in Jamaica. They had a number of children and left Jamaica for Australia where Thomas died (1855 in Melbourne) and Elizabeth and children went on to NZ. I noticed from the website that the cd/dvd was no longer available, but wondered if it was likely to be republished again any time soon ? You noted some time ago that there was a glitch (so easy when doing family history) so wondered if this has been dealt with or is it still a work in progress? I have downloaded the 1912 Carpenter book as an ebook (isn't technology wonderful?) so I have that information. Any pointers or information you can give would be greatly appreciated. Would Elizabeth's line be of interest at all. It is mostly quite well documented and I would be happy to pass it on if anyone in your part of the world is interested. Look forward to hearing from you. Cheers Sue Trimmer Melbourne Australia
