James William Longman

He was a Britsh Army Captain who served and distinguished himself atthe battle
of Waterloo. It is said he was the first to carry to England the tidings of
victory.  His death was finally caused by wounds received in this conflict.


226. Hiram Carpenter

Number 3635 in the Carpenter Memorial.  No family listed.
Both he and his wife died within a few days of each other in 1839. Settled in Higginsport, Ohio.

BIRTH: In the CM on page 409, his birth date is listed as about 1770 with a correction to abt 1790.
Census records from 1820 and 1830 indicate his birth abt 1761 to 1770.  And having at least  William and Davis. Not found in the 1840 US Census.
If born about 1770 then he is a brother or related closely to Aaron C. (AC) Carpenter.  FOR THIS REASON he his being reassigned as a brother until further information comes forward. JRC Dec 2013.

246. Edward Carpenter

Number 72 in the Samuel Carpenter 1912 book.  See page 60 and 67.
See Samuel Carpenter book, page 67-68. EDWARD received a good English
education and with excellent business qualifications possessed a taste for
readings and books.  He was about 5' 10" high, erect, active, vigorous, with
dark complexion, dark hazel eyes, brown hair, and handsome presence.
Born on the Josiah Miller Farm belonging to his grandfather, situated near the
Salem County almshouse, in Salem County, NJ.

EDWARD'S father built a house for the newly married couple with stands in the
forks of the roads leading to Barnesborough and Mullica Hill, directly in front
of the old Carpenter Mansion (1912).  This was later sold to the TONKIN
brothers, John and William C.

EDWARD then removed to Glassborough, where he devoted himself with energy and
intelligence to the prosecution of the business of manufacturing glassware.  He
was taken ill of typhus fever on his way home from Philladelphia, and died at
his father's house in Carpenter's Landing, in the midst of his successful
career, on the 13th of March, 1813.

Both EDWARD and SARAH CARPENTER lie in the old graveyard of Trinity Church,
Swedesboro, where a handsome monument marks the spot.

EDWARD in 1797 was commisioned a Captain of the 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment,
Gloucester County Miltia.  The commision is signed by Richard Howell, Governor
of NJ, who orginally came from Delaware.

In this record indicates that Edward was the first child of his parents.  Which
means Samuel was deceased by the time it was written?  Samuel died in 1792.

Penn during his absence in England, etc. Married Sept. 5, 1799, Sarah Stratton, daughter of Dr. James Stratton and his wife Anna Harris, of Swedesboro, Gloucester Co., N. J.

Sarah Stratton

SARAH had blue eyes, brown hair, which was very luxuriant, and never turned
gray.  She had a good figure, tall, erect, graceful, quiet, dignified, with a
captivating manner and possessing extraordinary powers of conversation.

SARAH STRATTON CARPENTER was educated under the care of Rev. John
Croes, afterwards Bishop of the Diocese of NJ, who was rector of Trinity
Church, Swedesboro, for twelve years.  To finish her education, she was sent to
Philadelphia and lived with the family of Mr. Charles French, half brother to
her stepmother, who resided on Front Street above Arch.

SARAH died at the residence of her son, EDWARD CARPENTER the 2nd, at 317 South
15th Street, Philadelphia, on the 12th day of February, 1852.

I have been able to trace Andrew and Mary Lois. I have found no
further information than what I have above on the youngest 3 children.
I have searched the census information and the Woodstock VR &
history and have not been able to find her parents. Any help you
