Capt John Quincy Carpenter
Birth:  Aug. 6, 1842
Death:  Mar. 16, 1910, Italy
150th PA Inf., Civil War, Captain
MOLLUS member #02070.
Obituary 15 March 1910:
CAPTAIN JOHN Q. CARPENTER
Veteran of the Civil War Dies in Italy
Captain John Quincy Carpenter, a descendant of one of the old Germantown families, died on Wednesday in Rome, Italy. The news of his death was received by his relatives here last night. He had made his home in Italy for ten years with his wife and daughter, Mrs. Eduardo Gordigianni. Mrs. Carpenter before her marriage was Miss Mary Dorance Dunning.
Captain Carpenter was noted for his work and experiences during the Civil War, which left him in ill health through the remainder of his life. He enlisted when a youth of 18 years and a student of the University of Pennsylvania. He was taken prisoner on the Gettysburg battlefield and was taken to Libby Prison, where he remained many months. At the close of the war Captain Carpenter re-entered the University and was graduated from the medical department in 1886. He never practiced medicine, but directed his knowledge of the profession to administering to himself, and though he never regained his health, it is believed that the studying of his own case enabled him to survive so many years the hardships he underwent in the war.
Captain Carpenter was a son of the late George W. Carpenter, of Germantown, and was a member of the family for whom Carpenter Street was named. His brothers and sisters are George and Sydney Carpenter, Mrs. Da Costa Newbold and Mrs. William H. Bennett.

March 29, 2012 West Mt. Airy Neighbors
Mt. Airy: Yesterday and Today: The Carpenter Family

John Quincy Carpenter was educated at the Germantown Academy and at Dr. Lyon's School in Haverford. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. At age 18, Quincy enlisted in the One Hundred and Fiftieth Regiment of Pennsylvania after the Civil War began. He rose in rank to First Lieutenant and had charge of his company on the first day (July 1, 1863) of the Battle of Gettysburg. He was captured by Confederate forces, who marched him to the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond. He was then taken to Columbia, South Carolina. He later escaped Confederate prison with his brother Emlen.
...
Emlen and Quincy were reunited as prisoners about October 1864 in Columbia, SC. They sought to escape by jumping off a train, but were recaptured by the Confederates in a swamp, and were taken back to Columbia to be confined in an insane asylum. As General William T. Sherman's forces were approaching, Emlen and Quincy concealed themselves in the asylum's ceiling. When the retreating Confederate forces set fire to the building, they made their escape and reached Sherman's army and safety.
After the war, Quincy Carpenter studied medicine and graduated from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1867. Quincy married Mary Dorrance, daughter of Robert D. Dunning, a descendent of Governor Bradford, who came to America on the Mayflower.

CENSUS: 1850 US Census - with parents
CENSUS: 1860 US Census - with parents

MILITARY:  Civil War
He was captured in 1864 at Todd's Tavern in VA and mentioned in Jeff Davis' papers. Apparently he was deeply affected by the Civil War and his ordeal as a POW. In 1870 he is still attending college and noted there in early 1867. By 1880 he is an artist, but I can find no examples of his work, nor is he listed in any of the artist books or works found on line under any variation of his name.
He was a member of the MILITARY ORDER OF THE LOYAL LEGION OF THE UNITED STATES. In 1900 he was noted as having a pension.
He was with the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry, called the Lancers. They only had lances and swords (officers with pistils) until later in the Civil War when they traded their sticks for carbines. There is a picture of him at:

He spent time on Meade's staff during the Civil War.

OBITUARY: Saturday, March 21, 1891, "The Germantown Guide"
Death of a Well-known Citizen Whose Service as a Soldier is Full of Interest.
Emlen N. Carpenter died suddenly Tuesday morning at his home on the estate of his father, the late George W. Carpenter, Mane and Carpenter streets. He won distinction daring the late war, and had a remarkable experience. He served with the First City Troup in the three months' campaign and in September of 1861 joined the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry, Rush's Lancers, as second lieutenant of D company, being soon after promoted to first lieutenant. He acted as special aid to General Franklin at Fredericksburg, and rejoining his command was promoted captain of E company, which formed part of Captain Starr's squadron as body-guard to General Hooker, then commanding the army of the Potomac. In this capacity be served at Chancellorsville. Subsequently he accompanied Captain Starr and a small body of picked men in carrying dispatches from Hooker at Fairfax Court House to Pleasanton, at Aldie, and served on the staff of the latter in the engagement of Jane 18. At Gettysburg he was on the staff of General Meade. He was taken prisoner in the fight at Todd's Tavern and sent to Libby Prison, then to Macon, Ga., where he met his brother, John Quincy Carpenter, an officer of the One Hundred and Fiftieth Pennsylvania, of the Bucktail Brigade, First Army Corps, captured at the first day's fight at Gettysburg, who had been a prisoner since that time. About the end of July, 1864, Captain Carpenter was shipped by rail for Charlotte, but before reaching that place he jumped from the car and made his escape to within five miles of the Union lines, when he was recaptured. He was then taken to Charleston and confined in the jail, whence, after three weeks of terrible suffering, he was removed to the hospital, but yellow fever breaking out among the prisoners they were in October, 1864, shipped for Columbia. When near Orangeburg, Captain Carpenter, this time accompanied by his brother, again escaped by jumping from the train, and set out for East Tennessee. After many trials they were recaptured in a swamp and taken to Columbia, where the prisoners were confined in the enclosure of the Insane Asylum. Hearing of the approach of Sher-man, Captain Carpenter and a few others determined on one more effort to escape. By means of a knife they succeeded in cutting holes into the ceiling of a wooden building in the yard, and when the prisoners were removed they concealed themselves between the ceiling and the roof. From this retreat they were driven when the buildings were fired on the departure of the Confederates, but Captain Carpenter was befriended by a lady in the town, who concealed him in her cellar, and the next morning before light a negro took him to an empty outhouse, from which he soon after beheld the sight of Sherman's advancing column and his deliverance was at last achieved. Recognized by a friend on Sherman's staff, Captain Carpenter was ordered to report to General Howard, who at once took him into his military family as an aid, and re-equipped after his long privations he served with Howard through the Carolina campaign and until the entry into Fayetteville, when be obtained leave of absence to visit his family, who had heard nothing of him for more than a year and a half. His death was from apoplexy. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, his remains having been interred in the family vault at St. Luke's Church.

Emlen Newbold Carpenter was also educated at Germantown Academy and at Dr. Lyon's School. While Emlen was preparing himself to enter Harvard in 1860, the Civil War broke out and he enlisted in the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry. He rose to the rank of First Lieutenant in 1862 at age 17 and served with distinction in the Peninsular Campaign and at Chancellorsville. At the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863), he served as aide-de-camp to General George G. Meade (see picture), Commander of the Union Army of the Potomac. At Gettysburg, Emlen "showed such gallantry and efficiency" that he was highly complimented by General Meade. He was promoted to Captain after Gettysburg and then to Lieutenant Colonel after Todd's Tavern.
In a gallant effort to rescue a fellow officer from the enemy at the Battle of Todd's Tavern (May 7, 1864), Captain Emlen Carpenter was taken prisoner by the Confederates. While being shipped by rail to Charlotte, he jumped from the train but was recaptured and confined to jail while yellow fever was breaking out among the prisoners.
When the retreating Confederate forces set fire to the building, they made their escape and reached Sherman's army and safety.
...
In 1866, Emlen Carpenter married Hannah Bullock, daughter of William W. Longstreth of Philadelphia. They had seven children. Emlen Carpenter's health was badly impaired by his wartime hardships. He lived abroad also, devoting himself to the study of art. He then returned to the family home and died at age 46.
