Numbered Spanish War Medal to Col, Phila City Cavalry - See image: RIN 12290 Edward Carpenter medal.jpg
Sold Date:03/11/2007 Channel:Online Auction Source: eBay Category:Militaria & Weapons
This is a full-sized, US Government issue US Army Spanish War Service Medal issued in 1919 to Colonel Edward Carpenter. It is numbered 1807 at the 6 o'clock position on the rim. The medal number has also been scratched into the blank panel on the medal reverse. Included are US National Archives records about this medal issued to Carpenter, such as a copy of his 1919 application for the medal and the award card showing award of this specific numbered medal. The medal original ribbon and full wrap brooch are in fine condition. The pin is fully functional. The medal itself is in excellent condition. In his application for the medal
Carpenter listed his qualifying service as a Private with the elite 1st Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry from April to July 1898 and then as a Regular Army 2nd Lieutenant with the 2nd Artillery Regiment from July to December 1898. (The Philadelphia City Cavalry was one of those rare militia organizations w the privates, much less the officers, were all Old Family bankers and lawyers.) In 1919, when the medal was issued, Colonel Carpenter was Port Inspector, Port of Embarkation, Hoboken, New Jersey. Edward Carpenter remained a Regular Army officer after the Spanish-American War. For example, in 1913 he was assigned to Ft. Ruger, Honolulu, Hawaiian Territory. Of great interest, for the things he must have witnessed, his last assignment was as a full colonel Military Attache assigned to the American Embassy in Berlin from around 1930 until he retired in 1933. Copies of the Army's List & Directory from the time are included. Also included is a copy from the Archives of a 1915 commendation to Carpenter for his work with the Chief of the Coast Artillery Corps. At that time then-captain Carpenter was assigned to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. The following is Carpenter's entry in the 1925 book Who's Who in the Regular Army: Colonel, Coast Artillery Corps; born Salisbury Point, Essex County, Massachusetts; raised in Philadelphia; attended the William Penn Charter School of Philadelphia and the New York Military Academy; his wife was Janet Lee of St. Louis, MO, who was schooled at Georgetown Convent.
