Chapin Carpenter, magazine executive, lobbyist
Chapin Carpenter, 83, a retired Life magazine executive who had a second career as a lobbyist, died Oct. 14 at his home in Washington.
He had pulmonary fibrosis, said his daughter Mackenzie Carpenter.
Beginning in the early 1950s, Mr. Carpenter worked on the business side of Life magazine, a weekly publication known for its photography. He rose through the magazine’s ranks to become business manager and then general manager before he was named publishing director for Life’s Asian edition. From 1968 to 1971, Mr. Carpenter was based in Tokyo and started Life’s first Japanese-language edition.
After Life folded in 1972, Mr. Carpenter embarked on a new career in Washington. From 1974 until his retirement in 1993, he was a senior vice president in the Washington office of the Magazine Publisher Association, the consumer magazine trade group.
Chapin Carpenter, a native of Bryn Mawr, Pa., was a 1945 graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H. He was a 1949 history graduate of Princeton University and served two years in the National Guard before joining Life.
He served as a member of the vestry at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in the District and was a past president of the City Tavern Club in Georgetown.
His marriage to the former Bowie Robertson ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Eleanor Fulton Carpenter of Washington; four children from his first marriage, Mackenzie Carpenter of Pittsburgh, Camilla Carpenter of Washington, Sophie Carpenter of Charlottesville and Mary Chapin Carpenter, a Grammy Award-winning folk singer, of Albemarle County, Va.; three stepchildren, Carolyn Nazdin of Washington, Allison Basil of Chevy Chase and Chip Chamberlain of Avon, Conn.; a sister, Anne Carpenter of Washington; and 15 grandchildren.

Henry Geyelin Carpenter, Advertising Aide
Henry Geyelin Carpenter, 62, a television advertising representative, died Wednesday after being stricken with an apparent heart attack in his office at Three Girard Plaza. He lived at 429 Hollybush Rd., Rosemont.
Mr. Carpenter had been an account executive with Blair TV, a television advertising firm at Three Girard Plaza, since 1973. Previously, he had been an advertising account executive with WPVI-TV and its forerunner, WFIL-TV, for 12 years.
He was graduated from Haverford School in 1952 and Delaware Valley College in 1956. He was a vestryman at Christ Church, Ithan, and a member of the Poor Richard Club, the Television and Radio Advertising Club and Main Line Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America.
Mr. Carpenter was the son of the last John T. and Antoinette Geyelin Carpenter of Villanova.
He is survived by his wife, Hedwig Tina Haiges, a son, Henry G. Jr.; three daughters, Linda G., Laura H. and Leslie J.; and a brother, Dr. John T. Carpenter Jr.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ Church Ithan. Burial will be in West Laurel Hill Cemetery.
