Subject: the carpenter family
Hello,
I just found your Genealogy.com post about the Carpenter family of Philadelphia.
I'm still trying to piece together my connection to this family, but I am somehow a descendant of Miles Carpenter of Philadelphia. My great-great-grandfather was Charles Carpenter, Jr. I am not sure whether his father was Charles Carpenter or Conrad Carpenter. I suspect that it was Conrad Carpenter, because Charles left Philadelphia in 1823, and that is the year Conrad Carpenter died.
Anyway, if you are still pursuing this information, please contact me. We might be able to help one another. I have some original documents from 1819 & 1823. I know that Charles, Jr., moved from Philadelphia to Bellefonte, PA in 1823. I know he lived there (and was Clerk of Courts) until the 1850's, when he vanishes. I do not know where he died. I know where his wife & 2 daughters lived in Pittsburgh for a short time, and I can follow my great-grandmother to her grave.
Please feel free to email me.

Subject: Miles Carpenter - Philadelphia
Hi John,
I check the message boards every now and again, and I update when I have new information. I’ve been plugging away at my ancestor, Charles Carpenter, Jr. - born in Philadelphia in 1794 - married Lydia Park, died 1854.
I now know Charles was the son of Conrad Carpenter, who was the son of Miles.
Charles was the brother of George Washington Carpenter, who built Phil-Elena in Mt. Airy.
Miles was the son of Joshua Carpenter. Miles was a drummer and a major. He was a career soldier. He served in Washington’s militia. He died Nov. 4, 1791 at the Battle of Fallen Timbers/St. Clair’s Defeat in Ohio. He was scalped. Miles married Mary Steer (dau. of Conrad Steer). I have the baptismal record for Miles and the marriage record. Miles was born in Philadelphia. His father was born in England. I have the children of Conrad and the children of Charles, brother of Conrad. I still haven’t found any male descendants of this Carpenter line. When my ancestor, Charles, left Philadelphia, he moved to Bellefonte, Centre Co. PA I have found his widow, Lydia Park Carpenter, in Allegheny City, now the North Side of Pittsburgh, with 3 daughters and one son in 1857 - 60. I know at one time someone was working on Carpenter genealogy for a book - I have misplaced her contact info. If you are still interested in this Carpenter line, please let me know. I will keep updating as I learn more. I have not found any male Carpenters in this line. I have not found any Carpenter matches to my autosomal DNA. I will be uploading my DNA to GedMatch, and if any Carpenter matches ever appear, I’ll let you know.

Subject: Re: Miles Carpenter - Philadelphia
John,
I have requested information from the Germantown Historical Society. Since I’m involved with the DAR, my primary goal was to prove which child of Miles Carpenter was my ancestor. I knew it was one of them. I believe I have done that.
It’s my intention to go to Philadelphia for a couple of days next summer to do some research on my own.
Right now, I can say with some certainty that Charles Carpenter, Jr. was the son of Conrad Carpenter. Conrad was the son of Miles. Miles was the son of Benjamin and Mary Carpenter. I have proofs and sources to believe all of that, including my family’s documents that dovetail with research.
I found Lydia Park Carpenter, widow of Charles, in Pittsburgh living in the same house as Miles N. Carpenter, who was definitely the son of Conrad, in the Pittsburgh City Directory from 1857 - . (Note that Lydia, Miles N. Carpenter, and Charles Carpenter, are all living at the same place).
According to my grandfather’s funeral record, Lydia Park Carpenter died in 1862. I haven’t found her grave, but she is living in the 1860 census - - and gone from the 1863 directory. Until I found the 1857 directory, I only had the 1860 census to go on, and it listed the 3 women only by their first initials. To me, that was supposition, not proof.
I have located 4 of Lydia’s children in Pittsburgh in 1857- 60. Martha Park Carpenter Collins is buried in Union Dale Cemetery, Allegheny City (now the North Side of Pittsburgh). She had one son, who died without issue. Adalaide is my great-grandmother, and she is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I haven’t traced Emily Carpenter or Charles Carpenter, at all after the death of Lydia.
Christ Church records show Benjamin Carpenter married Mary/Maria Harding/Hardin on November 23, 1738 -
Miles was born Nov. 4, 1739 and baptized 4 days later -
For me, that’s where my research stops - for now. I have oral history, but no proofs at all, that Benjamin Carpenter is the son of Joshua Carpenter.
As I said, I have requested records from the Germantown Historical Society.
I have not found any living male Carpenters. Charles (son of Charles and Lydia) was the only male Carpenter I have been able to trace. He was in Pittsburgh in 1857, working as a clerk for a steamboat company. He’d have been about 20. I will try to trace his descendants. Once Lydia died, the family split up. Adalaide was married in Johnstown, PA. I have no idea why - there must have been a relative there.
Conrad Carpenter had a number of sons, as did Charles Carpenter, so there are some possibilities. I haven’t traced Benjamin’s line at all.
Once I submit the DAR supplemental application for Miles Carpenter, it is highly possible that other descendants will join the DAR. This has happened in the past. If it does, I will make inquiries. This is not an active DAR line. No one has joined under Miles Carpenter for more than 50 years, which means re-establishing this line is a lot of work. This will be about a 1 - 2 year process from the date of my submission. I expect to submit sometime early next year.
I will keep you posted and send the GEDCOM file with all proofs as soon as I have the updated info.

WHO WAS GEORGE W. CARPENTER?
by Burt Froom
Last month, we started a fascinating new column called Yesterday and Today, written by Burton Froom. Burt has lived in Mt. Airy for over 25 years and has a unique perspective on the history and architecture of this community that we love. You will be enchanted by Burt’s discoveries of Mt. Airy’s 300 year history.- Marilyn
I hope that you enjoyed our kick-off article entitled A Look at Pelham’s Past in WMAN’s the newYesterday and Today column in the December 2011 WMAN eNewsletter. May Mt. Airy’s yesterdays come alive for us to enrich our lives today! - Burt
George Washington Carpenter, builder of the elegant “Phil-Ellena” mansion and estate in West Mt. Airy, left a large heritage to residents (including myself) in the Pelham neighborhood. What follows is fascinating information discovered about George Carpenter during the 1991-1994 Pelham Centennial Celebration. Carpenter’s paternal grandfather, Miles Carpenter, came to the village of Germantown from England in 1763. His father, Conrad Carpenter (1766-1823), became a land speculator. George W. Carpenter (1802-1860) was the fourth of Conrad’s nine children. George received a classical education at Germantown Academy, where he became interested in natural history.
At age 18, George Carpenter entered the wholesale drug business as an assistant. Eight years later, he established his own drug business at 301 Market Street, producing and marketing medicines ordered by physicians throughout the country. One of his popular products was a kind of “home medicine chest” that pioneer families took with them as they settled the frontier.
George Carpenter’s particular leisure interest was the study of mineralogy. He was elected a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia when he was 23 and served as its treasurer from 1828 until his death. He invested widely in real estate and eventually owned 500 acres and over 400 houses, stores and factories, and three large working farms. His contemporaries credited him with stimulating the commercial and residential development of the old and sleepy farming village of Germantown. His business success led to him becoming a director of six railroads. George Carpenter was a highly organized and focused individual. He rose each day between 4:00 and 5:00, wrote letters, spent time with his family at breakfast, and then took the Germantown railroad to the city, where he worked until 6:00. In the evening, he had tea with his family, and then finished his business correspondence. His rule was to complete each day’s work. He attended to all his customers and personally made decisions about all his properties. At his death at 58, George Carpenter was one of Philadelphia’s seven millionaires. It was said that he worked himself to death and had not been at ease long enough to enjoy the luxury and repose of his magnificent country estate. You may see the family vault where George W. Carpenter is buried near the north door of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, on Germantown Avenue near Coulter Street. In future articles, I would like to discuss George Carpenter’s family and then the Phil-Ellena estate.

Mt. Airy: Yesterday and Today: The Carpenter Family
By Burt Froom, of West Mt. Airy Neighbors
If you've ever been on Emlen, Phil-Ellena or Quincy Streets - or studied the Civil War - you won't want to miss this month's column by Burt Froom. It's full of famous people, daring escapes, and the adventures of the Carpenter family from the 19th century to today. - Marilyn
It is a pleasure to share the story of the family of George Carpenter and his home at the Phil-Ellena mansion. Sometimes, I feel I am living myself in the 19th century world of the Carpenter family as well as the early 21st century of today! I hope this Yesterday and Today column will lure you into some of the many past worlds that have helped create West Mt. Airy as we know it today. Enjoy! – Burt Froom
During the Pelham Centennial (1991-1994), our neighbors learned some particulars about the Carpenter family from a great-granddaughter of George Carpenter, who then lived in Chestnut Hill. These details will help us to appreciate the people whose names our streets bear. The Carpenter family was part of the landed gentry of 19th century Philadelphia society. They possessed a country seat at Phil-Ellena, land, education and wealth; contributed to the community; and risked their lives in patriotic service to our nation in war.
George Carpenter's first wife was Annabelle Willbank. She bore a son, George Carpenter, Jr. (1837-1921) who married Mary Rodman, the daughter of Thomas Fisher in 1860. He is said to have managed the family wholesale medicine firm after his father's death. He was associated with a race course located on the north side of Carpenter Lane, where the Septa Carpenter Station is now.
George Carpenter then married Ellen Douglas (1823-1900) in 1841. Ellen was a granddaughter of Captain John Douglas (1750-1823) of General George Washington's staff. Her father was Joseph Douglas (1779-1840), the high sheriff of Philadelphia for 17 years. His funeral attracted a big crowd, including the sitting vice-president of the U.S., Richard Johnson. Johnson was said to have shot and killed the Indian chief Tecumseh at the Battle of Tippecanoe in the War of 1812, and Captain John Douglas was a part of this action.
Ellen and George Carpenter had six children: John Quincy Carpenter (1842-1910); Emlen Newbold Carpenter (1845-1891); Frank Carpenter (1847-1856); Ellen Douglas Carpenter; Frances Graff Carpenter (1853-1940); and Algernon Sidney Carpenter (1856-1912).
John Quincy Carpenter was educated at the Germantown Academy and at Dr. Lyon's School in Haverford. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. At age 18, Quincy enlisted in the One Hundred and Fiftieth Regiment of Pennsylvania after the Civil War began. He rose in rank to First Lieutenant and had charge of his company on the first day (July 1, 1863) of the Battle of Gettysburg. He was captured by Confederate forces, who marched him to the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond. He was then taken to Columbia, South Carolina. He later escaped Confederate prison with his brother Emlen.
Emlen Newbold Carpenter was also educated at Germantown Academy and at Dr. Lyon's School. While Emlen was preparing himself to enter Harvard in 1860, the Civil War broke out and he enlisted in the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry. He rose to the rank of First Lieutenant in 1862 at age 17 and served with distinction in the Peninsular Campaign and at Chancellorsville. At the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863), he served as aide-de-camp to General George G. Meade (see picture), Commander of the Union Army of the Potomac. At Gettysburg, Emlen "showed such gallantry and efficiency" that he was highly complimented by General Meade. He was promoted to Captain after Gettysburg and then to Lieutenant Colonel after Todd's Tavern.
In a gallant effort to rescue a fellow officer from the enemy at the Battle of Todd's Tavern (May 7, 1864), Captain Emlen Carpenter was taken prisoner by the Confederates. While being shipped by rail to Charlotte, he jumped from the train but was recaptured and confined to jail while yellow fever was breaking out among the prisoners.
Emlen and Quincy were reunited as prisoners about October 1864 in Columbia, SC. They sought to escape by jumping off a train, but were recaptured by the Confederates in a swamp, and were taken back to Columbia to be confined in an insane asylum. As General William T. Sherman's forces were approaching, Emlen and Quincy concealed themselves in the asylum's ceiling. When the retreating Confederate forces set fire to the building, they made their escape and reached Sherman's army and safety.
After the war, Quincy Carpenter studied medicine and graduated from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1867. Quincy married Mary Dorrance, daughter of Robert D. Dunning, a descendent of Governor Bradford, who came to America on the Mayflower.
In 1866, Emlen Carpenter married Hannah Bullock, daughter of William W. Longstreth of Philadelphia. They had seven children. Emlen Carpenter's health was badly impaired by his wartime hardships. He lived abroad also, devoting himself to the study of art. He then returned to the family home and died at age 46.
The marriages and families of the other children of George and Ellen Carpenter were: their daughter Ellen who married Dr. William Bennett of Philadelphia in 1869; Frances Graff who married John daCosta Newbold and had five children; Algernon Sydney who studied, traveled abroad, and in 1891 married Amanda, the daughter of Florida land developer Hamilton Disston.
Ellen Douglas Carpenter died in 1900, six years after her beloved home "Phil-Ellena," was demolished by developers. Her friends said she led "the placid even life of an unselfish sincere Christian woman." She had borne the anxiety of her young sons' war service and their resulting illnesses, her own declining health, and the loss of her home. An era was ending.
In my next article, we will look at the Phil-Ellena estate and residence.

William Carpenter, to whom these lines are dedicated, was born in Elinsboro Township, April 4, 1792, and died May 13, 1866. He received only a common school education, and was thrown upon his own resources early in life by the sudden death of his father. After experiencing the trials and privations incident to a life of hard labor and close attention to the arduous calling of a tenant farmer in those days, he finally located on the Thomas Mason property in Elinsboro, and resided thereon for the long period of twenty-one years. He then purchased, in 1846, the Samuel Brick farm, in the same township, now occupied by his son, William B. Carpenter, and lived there until his removal later in life to Salem, where he closed his days. He was a man of decided convictions, plain in his tastes and habits, straightforward in his dealings, of strict integrity and held in general respect throughout a long and busy life. He was a regular attendant upon the meeting of the Society of Friends. He married Mary, daughter of Abner and Mary Beasley, and had children, - Elizabeth W. (wife of Joseph P. Thompson), Powell (deceased), Anna M. (deceased), William B., Morris H., and John M. Carpenter.

Terry,
Benjamin died intestate, so there is no will to be found. I've requested a copy of the probate record and hope to receive it by the end of the week (Delaware Archives is pretty efficient). According to my notes, the probate record mentions John as well as five sisters. I'll confirm when I receive the record.
What are LW&T records?

Terry,
I actually work down the street from the Delaware Public Archives, so I stopped by and picked up a copy of Benjamin Carpenter's probate record. He died intestate and his property was ordered sold, debts paid from the sale, and the balance going to his heirs. His wife Rebecca and "Annias D Johnson" were charged with administration.
When all was said and done, each of his children received $5.49 and Rebecca received $16.57. Archives has the probate dates as 1833 - 1834. Payment was made over several years during and after this. His children, in the order listed in the probate, and the dates they were paid are as follows:
Eliza (married to John Simpler and paid to John) - 22 Aug 1833
Nancy - 9 May 1835
Letty - 9 May 1835
John - 1 May 1838
Sarah - 12 Mar 1844
Lovey - 12 Mar 1844
I've worked under the assumption that the payment dates have something to do with the ages of the children and their age majority. I've been able to find John Simpler, Letty (Aletta), and Sarah in census and marriage records in Delaware in addition to John.
Let me know if this raises any additional questions, but this was the basis for placing John B as the son of Benjamin Carpenter.
- Reese
Benjamin’s probate file includes a number of records:
September 21, 1833 - Inventory Ordered and Administrative Bond
March 25, 1834 - Property Inventory Reported
November 18, 1834 - Report of Administration and Disbursements
However, the accounting for disbursements lists the first one going to Eliza and her husband John Simpler on August 22, 1833. The last payments went to Nancy and Letty on May 9, 1835.
