404. Judge Thomas Preston Carpenter
Number 173 in the Samuel Carpenter 1912 book. Page 68 and 90 plus.
THOMAS admitted to the bar in 1830, and in 1845 appointed by Gov. Charles C.
Stratton one of the associate judges of the Supreame Court of NJ. His
appointment expired in 1852 and he went back to private practice.
He was born in Carpenter's Landing now called Mantua.
Judge Carpenter was a successful delegate in the Episcopal Convention.
He was respected and esteemed by all who knew him for his genial manners,
personal integrity, profound legal learning and good judgement.Per the Carpenter Memorial, 1898: The judge had a seal which he used in letter
writing: the impression on sealing wax, the compiler of the CM (in 1898) had in
his possession, which appears to be a copy of the Rehoboth (Greyhound version
of the Carpenter) coat of arms.http://www.jansdigs.com/NewJersey/tcarpenter.html
Thomas Preston Carpenter
(Page 131 and 132) Thomas P. Carpenter, lawyer and ex-judge of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, late of Camden, was born on April 19, 1804, at Glassboro, Gloucester Co., N. J., where his father Edward Carpenter, was then living and operating the glass-works now owned by the Whitneys, his mother being a daughter of Dr. James Stratton of Swedesboro, well known through that portion of the State as physician and a churchman. He was descendant of Samuel Carpenter, Thomas Lloyd, and Samuel Preston, well known men in the early days of Pennsylvania. His father dying when he was quite young, Mr. Carpenter spent his early life with his grandfather, at Carpenter’s Landing (now Mantua). After receiving a liberal education, he studied law with Judge White of Woodbury, and was admitted as an attorney in September 1830. On October 26, 1838, he was appointed prosecutor of the pleas of Gloucester County, and took a prominent part in several important trails, and among the first the one known as the "Mercer trial" (March 1843). On February 5, 1845, he was appointed by Governor Stratton one of the associate judges of the Supreme Court of the State, his circuit comprising Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester Counties. On his retirement (after seven years) from the judgeship he devoted himself to the practice of his profession, principally as a counselor, and was eminently successful. At the breaking out of the Rebellion he joined the Union League of Philadelphia, and gave his entire sympathies to the Union cause. In 1865 he was active in promoting the success of the Sanitary Fair, occupying as he did the position of president of the New Jersey auxiliary. He married Rebecca, daughter of Dr. Samuel Clemens Hopkins, formerly of Woodbury. He was an earnest Christian, and in the church (Protestant Episcopal) he always held an honored position, being for many years vestryman, warden, and deputy to the diocesan and general conventions. He was not only an able lawyer, but amid the cares of an active practice he was thoroughly versed in classical and general literature. He was greatly respected throughout the State of New Jersey, of which he was at the time of his death one of the best known citizens. As a judge of the Supreme Court he was held in high esteem by his associates, and by the bar of the State for his ability. Learning and for the uniform good judgement which he brought to the consideration of cases. In the counties where he presided at circuits, which he visited during his term of office at regular periods, his genial manners and kindly intercourse with the people made him very popular. Judge Carpenter was interested and active at home in all enterprises, which affected the prosperity and welfare of his town. In church, at the bar, and in society he was, during his life, one of the most prominent men of his native State. Overwork and a death in the happy home-circle, where, after all his loveliest traits were shown, broke his health. In 1872 he had a slight threatening of paralysis, and he never fully recovered from the shock. He died at his home in Camden on the 20th of March, 1876.Among all notices that appeared none summed up his life and character more truthfully than that by Bishop Scarborough in the Convention address: " Judge Thomas P. Carpenter, of Camden after a life of singular purity and gentleness, was taken, not many weeks ago, from his labor to his reward. He held many important trusts in the diocese, and always won the respect and confidence of those who came in contact with him. While he was an impartial judge, an able lawyer, and a man of generous culture in other branches of learning, he was a very Nathaniel in guilelessness. The family, the parish, the diocese, and the whole church militant are, humanly speaking, the poorer for the death of such a man, but the store of Paradise is enlarged, which is far better."

RIN 4066 Louis Carpenter MilOffRec4.jpg (image 533)General LOUIS H. CARPENTER won the Medal of Honor as a Captain with the 10th
Cavalry (Regular Army - AKA "The Buffalo Soldiers") during a forced march to
the relief of Colonel Forsyth on the Arickaree Fork of the Republican River,
Colorado, and for the combat on the Beaver, in the campaign of 1868. Brevetted
Colonel for gallant conduct in an engagement with the Cheyenne and Sioux
Indians in 1868. He was appointed Captain on 28 July 1866 of "D" company, 10th
Cavalry and served with them for thirteen (13) years of continuous Indian wars.
He was respected by his men and his company had the lowest desertion rate of the
regular army during his charge. His ability to train and lead was notable and
he was mentioned in the official reports for Gettsburg and in an order issued
by General Sheridan concerning combat on the Beaver Creek in Kansas.
LOUIS entered the army, dropping out in his junior year of college, as a
private in the U.S. Cavalry; promoted second lieutenant, 6th Cavalry, July 17,
1862, and first lieutenant Sept. 28 1864. Was brevetted from first lieutenant
to lieutenant-colonel for gallant and meritorious conduct. He served in the
following campaigns during the Civil War; The Peninsula, Fredericksburg,
Gettysburg, Chancellorsville (in Stoneman's raid to the rear of Lee's army),
The Wilderness (as aide-de-camp to Major General Phillip H. Sheridan), Siege
of Petersburg, The Shenandoah Valley, Richmond (Sheridan's raid) and Trevillian
Station (as a colonel in charge of a regiment of volunters).
He was Director of cavalry instruction at Fort Riley, Kansas as Lt. Col, 7th
Cavalry (1892-1897). President of the Board to Revise Cavalry Tactics for the
United States Army. Promoted to Colonel, 5th Cavalry in 1897. Appointed
Brigadier General of volunteers May 1898 (Spainsh-American War) and commanded
1st Division, 3rd Corps at Chickamauga and afterwards of the 3rd Division, 4th
Corps at Tampa, Florida. Later ordered to Cuba to occupy the Providence of
Puerto Principe with a force consisting of the 8th Cavalry, 15th Infantry,
regulars, and the 3rd GA volunters, the first troops to take station in
Cuba after the Battle of Santiago. Appointed Military Governor of the
providence and remained there until in July 1899. He returned to NY and
was appointed Brigadier-General U.S. Army. He retired at his own request on
Oct. 19, 1899 having served over thirty eight years.Captain Louis H. Carpenter
On the morning of October 17, 1868, Captain Carpenter sent Lt. Myron Amick,
along with 10 troopers and a civilian scout, down Shortness Creek looking for
the Indians, while he led
the main body down the Beaver river. At nightfall Captain Carpenter encamped
with the stock inside a wagon corral and soon thereafter Lt. Amick returned to
report the discovery of
pony tracks crossing the rear of his line of march.
On October 18, while the rest of the command packed up for the return to
Fort Wallace, Captain Graham volunteered to make a short search farther
downstream. Graham, along with two
troopers, trotted away but had gone no more than a few hundred yards when a
small party of warriors rushed to cut him off from the main body. Captain
Graham and his troopers spurred
their mounts toward the creek, with bullets snapping past their ears.
Meanwhile, Lt. Amick and 30 men charged the Indians and drove them off. When
Cpt. Graham and Lt. Amick
rejoined, the whole command moved off, crossing to the north side of the Beaver
river. As they did so, some 200 Indians came up from the south side of the
stream. Gunfire raged from both sides.
Captain Carpenter was content to duel at a distance and continued his march
with H Company on the flanks and front, and I company covering the rear.
Shortly after midday the
Indians disappeared, only to return half an hour later with hundreds of
reinforcements. They attacked the column on the front, flanks, and rear.
Fearful of being caught in the creek
bottom, Captain Carpenter turned off and took his stand on a small knoll. He
formed his wagons in the shape of a horseshoe, with the mules facing inward.
The troopers rode inside,
dismounted, and then formed up outside the horseshoe, in open order.
The Indians immediately charged but were repulsed by the fire of seven
Spencer rifles, killing three within fifty feet of the wagons. The Indians then
circled, firing into the wagons,
suffering additional casualties as the buffalo soldiers returned a steady
accurate fire. No longer green troops, these H and I company soldiers could
hold their own with any troops in the
army! As the afternoon wore on, the Indians drew off and Captain Carpenter
moved down and encamped next to the water alongside the Beaver river.
"Wolves" howled around the camp all night, but there were no further attacks.
When morning came, the command set out for Fort Wallace.
On October 21, the command reached Fort Wallace. During nine days Captain
Carpenter had marched his command 230 miles, killing ten Indians, and wounding
a larger number, while his command sustained only three wounded. As a
direct result of his actions, General Sheridan personally recommended
Captain Louis H. Carpenter for a Medal of Honor! He was a Lt. Col. then Col. commanding H company of the 10th US Colored
Calvary. Film Number M589 Roll 15.CENSUS: 1900 US Census living with brother J. Edward Carpenter.

Captain Carpenter was gallant and meritorious throughout the campaigns, especially in the combat of October 15 and in the forced march on 23 September 24 and 25 to the relief of Forsyth's Scouts, who were known to be in danger of annihilation by largely superior forces of Indians.

Indian Wars Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient, Spanish-American War General. He joined the United States Regular Army after the outbreak of the Civil War, serving as an enlisted man in the 6th United States Regular Cavalry from November 1861 to July 1862. He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the regiment; a rank he would serve at until he end of the war. He participated in the numerous cavalry actions partaken by his unit, and would briefly command it during the Gettysburg Campaign. He also spent a good portion of his service as an aide-de-camp to Union General Philip Sheridan. He received Regular Army brevets up to Lieutenant Colonel for his outstanding services, as well as a brevet of Colonel, US Volunteers. After the end of the conflict he was promoted to Captain, US Regular Army and assigned to recruit African-American soldiers for two new Cavalry units that would become the famed 9th and 10th United States Cavalry (and would be known as "Buffalo Soldiers"). Given command of Company H, 10th United States Cavalry when recruitment was complete, he aw continuous service on the Western frontier from 1866 to 1870. He would perform his most celebrated act in September 1868, when he led a relief party that saved 50 besieged scouts of General George Forsyth in Kansas. His bravery there would win him the CMOH 30 years later. He was promoted up to Colonel during his service, and would command the Army posts of Fort Robinson in Nebraska, Fort Myer in Virginia and Fort Sam Houston in Texas. Upon the outbreak of the Spanish-American War he was made a Brigadier General, US Volunteers, and commanded first the 1st Division of the 3rd Corps, then the 3rd Division of the 4th Corps, and from 1898 to 1899 he was the Military Governor of the Puerto Principe province. Mustered out of Volunteer service in June 1899, he reverted back to his Regular rank of Colonel, but a few months, on October 18, 1899, he was advanced to Brigadier General. The next day he retired from the Army at his own request, with over 30 years service. His Medal of Honor citation reads "Was gallant and meritorious throughout the campaigns, especially in the combat of October 15 and in the forced march on September 23, 24 and 25 to the relief of Forsyth's Scouts, who were known to be in danger of annihilation by largely superior forces of Indians". His Medal was issued on April 8, 1898. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
