664. James Edward Carpenter

Number 384 in the Samuel Carpenter 1912 book.  Page 100, 127 and 128.
Also known as Edward Carpenter the Third.

J. Edward entered the Union army at the commencment of the Civil War as a
private in the Eighth PA Calvary.  He became a second lieutenant,
first lieutenant, captain then a brevet major of volunteers.
He served on the staff of General D. McMurtrie Gregg, commanding the Second
Calvary Division of the Calvary Corps, Army of the Potomac.
He was wounded seriously in the elbow in the engagement at Philamont, VA on
the advance after Antietam.

In the charge of the Eighth Calvary against Jackson's Corps at the battle of
Chancellorsville, his horse was shot under him and of five officers who rode at
the head of the attacking column, he was one of two who alone survived.
He was honorably discharged at the expiration of his term of service and
returned to Philadelphia where he studied law in the office of Theodore Cuyler,
Esq.  He was admitted to the bar in Philadelphia in 1865.

He was Treasurer of the Historical Society of PA for many years,
afterwards vice president.  He was second lieutenant of the First Troop of City
Calvary.  He was  vestryman of Christ Church and rector's warden of the Church
of Ascension.  He was delegate to the Diocesan Convention of the Episcopal
Church.  He was governor in the Rittenhouse Club.  He was chairman of the Board
of Managers and one of the founders of the PA Society Sons of the
Revolution.  He was also a companion of the military order of the Loyal Legion
U.S.
