You show a 1920 census record under Robert Lewis Carpenter - 149305, Robert and a wife named Ethel. This is a different Robert and Ethel. He is Robert Franklin Carpenter (1891 - 1960) who married Ethel Rentz. I’ve never been able to connect Robert F Carpenter to my line. Robert F is the son of George B Carpenter (1849 - 1933). George was the son of Trus (or Truston or Thomas) Carpenter, born about 1814. I can’t get further back than that.

Passed away on March 5, 2014. Elizabeth was born in Wilmington, DE. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Edith (Ash) Carpenter. She worked in the food service department at Hercules Corporation, and retired from Red Clay Consolidated School District and in post-retirement worked for Happy Harry's Home Health Center. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, beach vacations and "arm chair" traveling. She was devoted to her family which gave her much enjoyment. Her husband, Oliver J. Adkins, predeceased her in 1981 and her sister Elsie Jackson in 2012.
She will be dearly missed by her daughters and sons-in-law, Joann R. and Bob Rafferty of Wilmington and Eleanor and Lester Elliott of Delmar, DE; and her grandchildren and their spouses, Kevin (Audrey) Rafferty, Kerry (Patrick O'Connell), Terri (Tom) Mooney, and Wayne (Stephanie) Elliott. Also surviving are her sister, Sarah Snyder of Wilmington, her brother, Robert L. (Joan) Carpenter of Dover, DE, seven great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and three nieces.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 11 AM at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington where friends are invited to visitation after 10 AM. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a favorite charity . The family wishes to thank the staff at Churchman Village Nursing Home for the extraordinary love and care they provided.

Robert L. "Bob" Carpenter passed away suddenly on January 25, 2015. He was born in Wilmington on March 23, 1932 to the late Robert and Edith Carpenter.
Bob was retired from local 74 of the Pipefitters Union. He served as past President of the Shrine Club of Delaware, Nur Temple.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his sisters, Elsie Jackson, Elizabeth Adkins; and his first wife, Gertrude Carpenter. He is survived by his loving wife of 11 years, Joan Carpenter; sister, Sarah Snyder; step-daughters, Charlene Burr (Tony) and Denise Sawyer (Dan); step-grandchildren, Joshua and Jenn Burr; and his dearest friend, Buck Musser and family.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 10 am in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main St. in Smyrna. Funeral Services will begin at 11 am. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 200 Continental Drive, Newark, DE 19713. Condolence letters may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com.

Folks, For the past few weeks, I've been working with JNC III to dig into his family history. We haven't solved the Shaw connection or found the orphanage records for Charles Thomas Carpenter, but I believe we've found the linkage to the Delaware Carpenters. This is mostly circumstantial, but I think it's fairly compelling, especially given the DNA match. Below is what we found, and I would appreciate you poking holes in this. Let me know what you think. According to John Carpenter:
“The story goes: after Charles’ mother dies, Charles’ father was unable to care for Charles and put him in an orphanage. Charles ran away from the orphanage (no record of anyone signing him out) and tried to live in Philadelphia. Charles couldn’t make it in Philadelphia (it was a dark time in his life according to my grandfather) so he went to Delaware to live/work on a farm with his uncle. Supposedly his Charles’ father is buried in a cemetery in Chester City, Pa.”
I am assuming that the farm in Delaware was also where he met his future wife, Mary Elizabeth Bingnear. Mary's parents were farming in New Castle County around Odessa, Delaware up until the late 1920s. In addition, The WWI draft registration (5 Jun 1917) for Charles Carpenter identifies him as a farmer working for himself in McDonough, Delaware. McDonough is about 3 miles north of Odessa. Mary Bingnear’s obituary says she was born in Odessa, Delaware, moving to Chester, PA in 1923.
There is a James H Carpenter buried in Chester Rural Cemetery. Born in 1861 around Smyrna, Delaware and died 16 Mar 1895 in Chester Pennsylvania. He was 25 when Charles was born and Charles was 7 when James died. James is identified as single at the time of the 1880 census, and on his death record in 1895. This suggests that Charles was born out of wedlock, which would provide one explanation for the orphanage.
Mary Bingnear’s mother was Mary Shetzler. James H Carpenter had a sister Lucinda, who married Edward Shetzler in 1891. Mary Shetzler and Edward Shetzler were brother and sister. While the rest of the Carpenter family remained in Chester, Mary and Edward settled in Odessa. Edward and Lucinda are shown living in Odessa from 1900 until their deaths.
Edward and Mary Shetzler had another sister Anne, who married Henry Bingnear. Henry Bingnear was Mary Bingnear’s uncle. In the 1900 census, Henry and Anne are living next door to Edward and Lucinda Carpenter Shetzler, again in the Odessa area. The speculation is that Charles was placed in the orphanage around age 7 after his father died. Later, his sister Lucinda advocated for his retrieval, and he was given an opportunity to work for his future wife’s uncle Henry Bingnear in Odessa. Note that the oral history mentions "Uncle Henry", but does not mention a last name.

Hey John,
I did get a chance to look at the last attachment you sent me. Its been a little crazy around here, my son just started school and I had a couple job interviews. Your stuff is right on except for one. There was one census that has the right info, just needs some corrections.
I dug a little deeper with my father to get more information. I have 2 possible theories and I’m hoping that DNA can help solve this mystery.
Theory #1: I was mistaken earlier when I said Charles went to visit George Bernard Shaw. Shaw actually came to see Charles. Shaw told Charles that he was his only living heir. I told my father that he needs to contact our relatives and find that letter(if it is still around). Shaw was born in Ireland and Charles had put down on a census that his mother was from Ireland(on the census that is a little off, it had his father from scotland and mother from PA. I think that is another mistake). Shaw (in his biography) had many affairs even with married women. Thinking of human nature, if Shaw showed up when Charles was in his 40-50’s to tell him he was his father. I could understand Charles telling him off cause he wasn’t around when he was younger. Again, I’m trying to think of human nature, and there is no other explanation for us having any connection to him. My great grandmother is very sure about Charles speaking of Shaw. Even if this was the case, I want to try and find out where Carpenter comes from.
Theory #2: Supposedly, Charles mother was half Cherokee indian or it was Charles’ father’s mother. I’m thinking it was Charles’ father’s mother. Through online looking there was a Carpenter who married into the Cherokee clan and reproduced from there. Not that of a far fetched idea.
My father is leaning towards theory 1. I guess if my DNA(which just came today) comes back with no match to the Carpenters, then theory 1 is plausible. If it does match a Carpenter, then I would look further into theory 2.
I guess Charles’ mother could have been blackmailing Shaw or she didn’t know who the father was?
At one point my father found info stating Charles was released from an orphanage in Delaware to a Henry Carpenter (uncle?). He will be going to Delaware to try and retrieve/confirm this information.
I have tried to find a 1900 census of him, but came up empty handed. I do not know what religion he was, but I will work on finding that out.
You will hear this a hundred times, but I want to thank you for your time and effort in our family’s mystery. I can’t begin to tell you how appreciative we are.
