Descendants of an unnamed Carpenter-187754 of the Northern Neck of Virginia

Notes

4. Joseph Carpenter

COMMENT:
This is not likely a line related to the Botetourt County, Virginia Carpenters. That is a Group 2 - or Providence, Rhode Island line. Two descendants of this Joseph have tested and are part of Group 32.

BIRTH:
No exact birth has been established. Guesstimates range from 1680 to 1725.  I am using about 1715. All agree he was born or of Virginia.

BOOK:
Descendants of Samuel Carpenter of Virginia - Iowa Branch
Printed Pro-Bono March 1967 by Samuel V. Carpenter of Centerville, Iowa, USA
[Father's notes on same page listed as Family #I.]
John Carpenter - Mary (probably Marshall) (See page 37, Section II.) John Carpenter was in Lancaster County in 1161 -- transported by David Fox -- Lancaster County Records Book 3, page 213. (See page 38, Section II.) He later was in old Rappahannock. He was closely associated with a brother, Charles, who married Rebecca -- first of Lancaster and then of Northumberland. They could have come from Maryland.
John (and Mary) of Lancaster, 1667, is identical to John of Richmond County, who died in 1692. He bought the identical land in Sittenbourn Parish, 1683 (100 acres), that Joseph and Gressell sold in 1703 as land of their inheritance, thus proving that Joseph, who became 21 in 1701, was son and heir of John and Mary -- Book 5, page 31. (See page 9, Section II.)

Listed as Family #II on page 2.
Joseph married Gressel, then Jane. Jane later married John Carter. (See page 13.) Jane's will, 1781, mentions Carpenter children James, John, ann. also son William Carter and daughter Elizabeth Carter. The will also mentions James Nash. (See page 70, Section II)
Section III - Starting on page 121 of the pdf version of the book - is a listing of related material found in Virginia on Joseph, son of John. But the offical section on him des not start until page 128.

Section IV - Page 191 of the pdf version - His wife Jane is cited as a widow and who later married a Carter. She writes a will on 8 Feb 1781 and lists her Carpenter children along with two Carter children she bore.

Jane (_____) Carpenter (who later married a Carter after the death of her first husband but cited as the widow Carpenter) made a will on 8 Feb 1781 and it was filed in Westmoreland County, Virginia.
