20. Joseph Carpenter

Joseph seems to have dropped off and not much is known about him.  By rather inaccurate default, I have given him a wife and child. BUT, this is just a guess until more info comes in. Highly Speculative!

Mary

NOTE:
Maybe the spouse of Joseph. Very speculative here!

This one is a stray.  From a Carpenter line not clarified. A temporary connection has been made to Joseph, because he has no known family. Yes, it is likely wrong, but when more info comes in, maybe this person can be properly identified.

BOOK:
“Descendants of Samuel Carpenter of Virginia - Iowa Branch” Printed Pro-Bono March 1967 by Samuel V. Carpenter of Centerville, Iowa, USA.

This Samuel Carpenter, Per "The Carpenter Family History" is cited as:
Samuel Carpenter the First of Virginia, Pennsylvania and Illinois, Illinois Branch.
Page 3
"He resided about 10 years after the War of 1812, then moved to Pennsylvania and lived there about five years, thence to Indiana, where he operated a water powered Grist Mill on the Sand Creek River, and then he moved to Lynchburg, Jefferson County near Opdyke, Illinois. (Lynchburg is now a vanished town.) There he bought a large acreage of land. He then became a Circuit Rider or Methodist Preacher and gave his entire time to that cause and at the time of his death held only in his possession ten acres of land as the result of his good Samaritan deeds. He was known to speak with much authority, not as a command but always kind and above reproach. The last two phrases were made by his grand daughter Mary (Carpenter) Lamont, who was sixteen years old at his passing. Samuel Carpenter attended Mount Olive ...
Page 4
... Church and preached there often.  At the date of this writing January, 1959, this original church building still stands, and worship services are held regularly.  This is one of Illinois' land marks. This building was sed also as a station in the underground passage of slaves enroute to Canada to gain their freedom. Samuel Carpenter helped administer help to these people such as food and hauling them (by wagon) to their next station north. This can be found in books on Illinolis History. ..."
A little further down on Page 4 of that record indicates the following:
"A further record copied from the family Bible of Samuel Carpenter, now in possession of John L. Carpenter the forth, at the time of this publication states that Melinda Carpenter daughter of William and Ann Spuring was born October 14, 1804."
The Bible record also has birth and death dates of the family members starting on Page 5.

BOOK2:
Descendants of Samuel Carpenter of Virginia - Iowa Branch

“Descendants of Samuel Carpenter of Virginia - Iowa Branch” Printed Pro-Bono March 1967 by Samuel V. Carpenter of Centerville, Iowa, USA. The original printed book is in the possession of his son Samuel Carpenter of San Diego, California in May 2016. The pdf version of the book was created in May 2016 on the behalf of the author’s son.

The author's goals were two fold:
1. Consolidate information he had gathered into written format for future researchers.
2. To put in writing a complete history of the Iowa branch of the descendants of Samuel Carpenter I, 1795.

The author also expressed appreciation to John Lyle Carpenter of East Saint Louis, IL for his publication "The Carpenter Family History" dated March 31, 1960. Especially for the Photostat copy of births, deaths and marriages from the Bible of Samuel Carpenter I, 1795. In 1967 John L. Carpenter had that Bible in his possession.

The author was also grateful to his uncle William Sanford Carpenter, M.D. and his daughter Helene Carpenter Craig for their cooperation and financial help in gathering the information for this book.
