SAMUEL CARPENTER
The venerable Samuel Carpenter, who was one of the early pioneers of Lucas county, passed away on Tuesday morning, August 12th, at the home of his son, Wesley Carpenter, near Newbern, after an illness of several weeks. Death was due to the infirmities of old age.
Yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock ritualistic ceremonies were conducted at the Wesley Carpenter home by the G.A.R. of this city, of which order he was a member. The remains were then taken to the Newbern church, where services, conducted by Rev. N. F. Hicks, of the U. B. church of Chariton were held, after which interment took place in the Newbern cemetery.
Samuel Carpenter was born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, on January 28th, 1832, parents being of revolutionary stock. He came to Monroe county, Iowa in 1852, living there two years, and then moved to Lucas county, Iowa, where he has since resided, a period of nearly sixty years.
He was married on July 27th, 1854, near Newbern, to Miss Sarah Jane Graves, who died February 3rd, 1905. He is survived by three children, Wesley and Mrs. Melinda Callahan, of this county, and Dr. Wm. Carpenter, of Des Moines. One daughter, Mrs. Mary Whitlock, died several years ago.
Mr. Carpenter was a staunch, upright citizen, who ever stood for the cause of right. He was a good, Christian man, true and indulgent to his family, and a kind neighbor and friend.
At the opening of the Civil War he came nobly to the defense of his country and enlisted in the service as a member of Company E, 54th Iowa Infantry, serving until he was discharged for disability. He was a charter member of the United Brethren church at Newbern.
When he came to Iowa he drove an ox team for Philo Prather, who formerly lived at Russell, and entered land near old LaGrange in Monroe county. His farm near Newbern was deeded to him by the government.
He enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him and his demise will be mourned by a large circle of friends, who will extend sincere sympathy to the grief stricken relatives.

SARAH JANE CARPENTER
Sarah J. Graves was born in Bartholomew county, Ind., August 30, 1836, and died at her home near Newbern, Lucas county, Iowa, on February 3, 1905, aged 68 years, 5 months and 4 days.
She was married to Samuel Carpenter on July 27, 1854, in Marion county. They shortly moved to their present home, where they have lived for over fifty years. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last July. In their early years here they endured the hardships of pioneer life, living in a log cabin and hauling most of their goods from Keokuk with oxen or horses.
Deceased was a daughter of John and Rebecca Graves, and was the oldest of nine children, of whom three brothers and one sister still survive, Isaac and Nathan, of near Newbern, A. T., of this city, and Mrs. M. M. Salyards, of Omaha.
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, three of whom are dead. Of the living, Mrs. Malinda Callahan lives here, John Wesley lives north of town, and Dr. William S., at Des Moines. All were with their mother during her last hours.
Mrs. Carpenter was a faitful, industrious, Christian woman, and her death will be widely mourned.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Blackburn, from the home, on Saturday afternoon. Interment was in the Newbern cemetery.
