Descendants of an unnamed Carpenter-187754 of the Northern Neck of Virginia

Notes

62. John Carpenter

BOOK:
“Descendants of Samuel Carpenter of Virginia - Iowa Branch” Printed Pro-Bono March 1967 by Samuel V. Carpenter of Centerville, Iowa, USA.
Section IV - page 205 of the pdf book.
John Carpenter was born in Mutton Town, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, November 23, 1835. He moved with his parents to near Seymore, Indiana where his father Samuel Carpenter operated a water powered Grist Mill. About 1851 the Carpenter Family moved to Jefferson County, Illinois, where Samuel Carpenter purchased a large tract of land located at a point then known as Lynchburg about two miles north of the little town of Opdyke, Illinois. Samuel Carpenter sold the south portion of land to a man named Opdyke from whom Opdyke, Illinois got its name.
At the age of 18 years John with his brother Samuel had obtained Government Land Grants from their father rights, due to service rendered in the War of 1812.
John and Samuel went to Iowa in a covered wagon where they took up claims and began to farm. It was there John met and later married Zipporah Katherine (Powell) Collins, August 12, 1858.
The orginial land grant is [still in] the possession of the Carpenter's Iowa Branch. (1967).
On August 12, 1858, John Carpenter married Zipporah Katherine (Powell) Collins at Newbern, Iowa. They remained in Iowa until the early sixties, then they moved to Illinois settling in Pendleton Township in Jefferson County in the community known as Long Prairie. After returning to Illinois, he was called for duty in the War of 1861 (Civil War) but he was rejected because of an injury to his chest caused by the kick of a horse, injuring his chest. John was a member of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; membership was at Liddleton, Illinois. John was a lover of horses and fruit.
He had an orchard that was known for miles around as having the finest and largest variety of any orchard. He also helped to build the Laird Church, three and one-half miles northeast of Belle Rive, Illinois. Through the influence of their grandson William G. Lamont who was ordained a minister in the United Brethern Church, and his wife Anna (Scott) Lamont, John and Zipporah Carpenter became menbers of that church in 1910.
They were laid to rest in Laird Cemetery nearby the church. John Carpenter died July 24, 1912, and Zipporah Katherine Carpenter died February 17, 1916. Long since the farmhouse and barn and orchard have been removed and in their place stand several oil wells.
