OBITUARY

MALINDA CARPENTER CALLAHAN
Mrs. Malinda Carpenter Callahan, daughter of Samuel and Sarah Jane Graves Carpenter, was born at Newbern, Iowa, August 28, 1857 and died at Yocom hospital, following a six weeks illness, March 29, 1949, at the age of 91 years, seven months and one day.
In 1877 she was married to Moses Fountain and to this union one daughter was born, Edith Fountain Anderson, who preceded her mother in death in 1937, as did Mr. Fountain in 1887. In 1902 she was married to Warren Callahan, who died in 1933.
She is survived by one grandson, Richard F. Anderson and one great grandson, Stephen Anderson. Also surviving are two step-daughters, Mrs. Ethel Newstead and Mrs. Myrtle Boyer, both of Portland, Ore., and one step-son, Dr. Bert Callahan, of York, Neb.; two nephews, Sam Carpenter, of Centerville, Virgil Carpenter, of Harlan, and a large circle of friends.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. L. A. Wilson, of St. Andrew's Episcopal church, were held at the Beardsley funeral home on Thursday afternoon, March 31, at 2 p.m. Interment was made in the Chariton cemetery.

Dr. William Sanford Carpenter married Dr. Lenora Elizabeth Carpenter (not related) of Washington, Indiana (born February 23, 1870), on June 25, 1894, at Chariton, Iowa. dr. William Carpenter was Iowa's criminologist for over forty years, and he owned and operated the school of Mortuary Science at 4937 Forest Park St., St. Louis, Missouri. He died in St. Louis, Missouri, December 9, 1944 and is buried at Des Moines, Iowa.
His wife - Dr. Lenora Elizabeth Carpenter practiced her profession of osteopathy in Des Moines and st. Louis. She died in Highland, Illinois, October 23, 1946. She is also buried in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the daughter of Lewis Cass Carpenter and Sarah McLaughlin, who were married in Washington, Davis County, Indiana.

As a physician she was headed to France for American Red Cross work. She was scheduled to leave on 15 Mar 1919. On the next page of the image, she is described as: Age 41, 5 feet 2 inches, Medium forehead, Blue eyes, straight, small nose, no distinguishing marks, mouth small, chin round, hair mediam brown, complexion fair and her face round. There is a picture of her with her hair in a bun at the bottom of the page. Her husband being duly sworn provides information. On the third image page is a Red Cross endorsement. On the fourth image page is a War Department approval that she will be doing duty for the A.E.F in connection with the American Red Cross.

Children and grandchildren are noted in the book.Charles Leroy (better known as Roy or. Dr.) attended public school at Districts Long Prairie and Salem, Wayne Co., Illinois. At the age of eighteen, he became a public school teacher. He was married to Hettie Barbee August 28, 1902.
Hettie was the daughter of Fletcher and Rena Bell (Chase) Barbee. After some years teaching, Roy entered medical school moving his family to St. Louis, Missouri. After graduation, he practiced medicine at West End, Thompsonville, and West Frankfort, Illinois.
He was buried in West Frankfort Cemetery.To Charles Leroy Lamont and Hattie (Barbee) Lamont were born eight children.

William Guy (better known as Bill. or Will) was born on the Late Carpenter farm in southwest Wayne Co. He attended school at Salem. At the age of 'Aunty, he entered Ruskin Cave College, Ruskin, Tennessee. He married Anna Lucretia Scott on April 20, 1909.
Anna Lucretia (Scott) Lament was the daughter of James M. and Sarah Scott, Fairfield, Wayne Co., Illinois.
James M. Scott enlisted in the Army. He was assigned to Company K, 111 Regiment, Civil War. He was discharged May 31, 1865, at Spring Field, Illinois.
Sarah M. (Hutchins) Scott inherited farm from heirs of David L. Hutchins, Sergeant in Captain Brown's Company, War of 1812. Lard Grant Number 1069 Lend Office Shawnee Toim, Illinois.
Anna Lucretia (Scott) Lamont was born on this her mother's farm. Lend grant signed January 17, 1853, by President Millard Fillmore. Document is now in possession of Anna Lucretia (Scott) Lamont.
William Guy served as pastor of United Brethren churches from 1909 to 1918, in Woods Co. Oklahoma, Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Russell, Kansas. In 1918 he was called by Y. N. C. A. of Topeka, Kansas, to go to France as ON of their representatives.
In France he was assigned to 80th Division 117th Infantry Regiment. He was in action on Somme Front. From this experience, he was hospitalized for more than four months, but was able to return home Jump 1919.
His state of health was such that he could not return to active castorate, so he became interested in Life Insurance and in June, 1932, was one of the organizers of the Old Surety Life Insurance Company of Alva.
He was elected its secretary and treasurer. To Will and Anna Lamont were born three children.

Clifford E. is the son of Walter Emerson and Lucy Alice (Coleman) Adams. Clifford was born April 10, 1919, in Harper, Kansas.
Clifford served in World War II, Ship Fitter 1st Class; stationed at San Diego, U. S. Naval Repair Base.
Clifford is President of Adams Hard Facing Company, Guymon, Oklahoma.

William Frederick (Fred) Carpenter Family - Illinois BranchWilliam Frederick Carpenter, son of John and Zipporah Catherine (Powell) (Collins) Carpenter, was born in Chariton, Iowa, February 2, 1861. He moved with his parents in a covered wagon to Jefferson County, Pendleton Township, Illinois, in 1862. Fred, as he was called, attended Ewing College in Ewing, Illinois.
He was a farmer, butcher in Fairfield, Illinois, and a stock grower in Jefferson, Wayne, and Hamilton Counties in Illinois. On March 8, 1893, he was married to Annette Burton Chase in Long Prairie in Wayne County, Illinois, at the home of her parents. Fred served as Superintendent of Sunday School and a member of the Church Choir in Dahlgren, Illinois.
He moved with his family to Mt. Vernon, Illinois, in 1924. There he and Annette were members of the First Methodist Church. Fred worked as night watchman for the Mt. Vernon Furnace & Mfg. Company for several years. He died June 12, 1934, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Annette Burton (Chase) Carpenter was born February 24, 1870. She was the daughter of Elias Howard and Emily (McNair) Chase. Annette attended Hayward College in Fairfield, Illinois. She taught school a number of years in Wayne County, Illinois. She in later years was Superintendent of the Home Department of the First Methodist Church and visited in the homes of "Shut—in's." She died February 9, 1945. Both she and Fred are buried in Oakwood Cemetery at it. Vernon, Illinois.
Elias Howard Chase, father of Annette (Chase) Carpenter was born in Waver, Vermont, May 10, 1836. He was married to Emily McNair (who was born at Sehooleraft, Michigan, in 1843) on May 30, 1861, at the home of Samuel iackett near Schoolcraft, Michigan. To them were born the following children. Rena Bell (Chase) Barbee, Cara E. (Chase) Cox, Frank Eugene Chase, Annette Burton (Chase) Carpenter, and Fred W. Chase. Emily (McNair) Chase died August 28, 1873, and was buried while Elias aeon a visit to Vermont. On August 7, 1875, Elias was married to Elzira Black of Fairfield, Illinois.
To this union were born the following children: Perry T. Chase, Elias Hibbard Chase, Florence K. (Doottie) (Chase) Maxwell. Elias Howard Chase was a successful farmer and financier. He died February 4, 1906. Elmira died August 6, 1936. Elias Howard and both wives are buried in Thornsworth Cemetery south of Keenes in Wayne County, Illinois. He left an endowment fund to his Church Cemetery and Long Prairie Rural School near his home. Elias Howard Chase came to the middle west and taught school in Michigan and Illinois. He went to Colorado during the Gold Rush in 1859 buying mining equipment in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and helped pull it in a cart to the mining areas of Colorado. He also staked a claim to some land while he was there. Elias enlisted in the Commissary Department of the Union Army and was stationed at hounds, Illinois.
Gladys Beatrice Carpenter was born in Four Mile Township, Wayne County, Illinois. She graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois. She taught school in Hamilton, Wayne, Franklin, and Jefferson Counties, thirty-nine years of which thirty-two years were in Mt. Vernon City Schools. She married E. Clyde Anderson (born November 16, 1893) of Decatur, Illinois, on August 10, 1957, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. E. C. Anderson is the son of Albert and Mary Ann (Hand) Anderson. Mary Ann was born February 26, 1874. They were married in July, 1892. Another child of Albert and Mary Ann Anderson is Doris Clove Dale Anderson (born September 28, 1895).
She married Carter Tippie in December, 1914. Albert is buried in Thornsworth Cemetery in Wayne County, Illinois. Mary Ann Anderson married Robert M. Williamson. She died July 4, 1947, and is buried in Benton, Illinois. E. Clyde Anderson is a Refrigeration Engineer in Decatur, Illinois. He is the father of Mrs. Aleta Stanis of Decatur, Illinois, Mrs. Helen Hedlud of Costa Mesa, California, and Mrs. Berneta Bull of Belmont, California. Harry Eugene Carpenter was born in Four Mile Township in Wayne County, Illinois. He attended Dahlgren High School. Later, he worked as a Rail Mail Clerk for about two years. He enlisted in World War I May 20, 1918. He was discharged December 10, 1918, at Camp Grant, Illinois, and is now working in Kansas City, Kansas, for Fiber Glas Company. He married Clara (Zumalt) Taylor (born March 30, 1902)(in Kansas City, Missouri) February 6, 1938. She is the daughter of William and Minnie Zumalt of Cass County, Missouri. Clara is the mother of J. M. Taylor, Minnie (Taylor) Brammer, and Virginia (Taylor) Elliott all of Kansas City, Missouri.CENSUS: 1870 US Census - with parents

She married E. Clyde Anderson (born November 16, 1893) of Decatur, Illinois, on August 10, 1957, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
E. C. Anderson is the son of Albert and Mary Ann (Hand) Anderson. Mary Ann was born February 26, 1874., They were married in July, 1892.
Another child of Albert and Mary Ann Anderson is Doris Clove Dale Anderson (born September 28, 1895). She married Carter Tippie in December, 1914. Albert is buried in Thornsworth Cemetery in Wayne County, Illinois.
Mary Ann Anderson married Robert M. Williamson. She died July 4, 1947, and is buried in Benton, Illinois. E. Clyde Anderson is a Refrigeration Engineer in Decatur, Illinois. He is the father of Mrs. Aleta Stanis of Decatur, Illinois, Mrs. Helen Hedlud of Costa Mesa, California, and Mrs. Berneta Bull of Belmont, California.

He married Clara (Zumalt) Taylor (born March 30, 1902 in Kansas City, Missouri) February 6, 1938. She is the daughter of William and Minnie Zumalt of Cass County, Missouri.
