Hi John my great Grandfather Robert father of Edward died from wounds in WW1 on 26th December, and was 11th battalion Royal Irish Reg

Kim,

The story is so close yet so far apart in the details of service and death.

It has been interesting and learning about the sacrifice of so many in the Great War.

If you have a living biological male direct Carpenter descendant of your grandfather Robert or his son Edward, then that would qualify them for a free basic (12 marker) Y-DNA test.  See Carpenter Cousins at:
https://isogg.org/wiki/Free_DNA_tests

We remember those who have served and passed on before us.

Take care and God Bless!

Kim,

I assume Edward Carpenter (b. 6 Jan 1914 - d. 5 Nov 1986) is your grandfather?

It seems the Robert Leslie Carpenter (chr. 7 May 1895 - d. 26 Oct 1915) who may or may not have married a Jane ____ about 1913. He was an officer cadet then later promoted to Lieutenant in the London Regiment and killed in action in or near Loos, Flanders, France at age 20.

The family story is she became pregnant and returned home to Ballywater, Down, Ireland where she had the child. The child being named Edward Carpenter b. 6 Jan 1914.

Letters between them continued until his death. This is how the family learned of the child's name and birth. Apparently the union or liaison was not approved by the Carpenter family at that time.

Now you report that Edward's father is a Robert Carpenter b. 8 Jul 1890 and he was from Ballywalter. By any chance was he killed in the "Great War" on or about 26 Oct 1915?

Is it possible that I have the wrong Edward Carpenter with the birth date of 6 Jan 1914?

Hi Kim,

I am in touch with your Carpenter cousins in the USA. They are mainly in the State of Utah. I am happy to share with you what I have via email.

My eventual goal is to connect the cousins genetically. Ideally by Y-DNA testing. The male Y Chromosome is passed virtually unchanged over the generations and is ideal for surname research. If a living male Carpenter is not available then by atDNA (autosomal DNA) testing which has a generation limit of about 4-5 generations. See more at: http://carpentercousins.com/DNA-Type-Tests.pdf

We use triangulation to compare genetic DNA testing to genealogy. It is a form of check re-check. See more at: http://isogg.org/wiki/Triangulation

I run the Carpenter Cousins Project at: http://carpentercousins.com

A small example of your common Carpenter line that has been Y-DNA tested is on our lineage page at: http://carpentercousins.com/generallineage.htm#g33

Your common ancestor with Group 33 is:
Robert W. C#49477 b. 1831 Somerset - He died in 1871.

The American line descends through Joseph Hatten Carpenter and your line descends through his brother Robert Arthur Carpenter (1859-1942) to Robert Leslie (1895-1915) to Edward Carpenter (1914-1986).

I know I am throwing a lot of new material at you.

I am happy to answer any questions.

Bio:
Our beautiful, loving mother, Edith June Carpenter Ward, age 93, passed away on March 11, 2021 after a long and fulfilling life.

She was born September 4, 1927 in Manti to Joseph Gerald Carpenter and Mary Koch Carpenter. She grew up in a home filled with love, hard work, and service to others. Making friends was easy for her as she was happy, and full of fun. She and her friends were involved in traveling, going to dances, and attending the many community events. During her high school years, they worked in canneries providing food for the troops during WWII, many of whom were from Manti. Her greatest love was music, singing and playing the piano. She also enjoyed oil painting, sports, sewing, gardening, and crafts.

After high school graduation in 1945, she attended Snow College in Ephriam. She worked as a secretary for U.S. Steel in Salt Lake City. While there, she met Craig Marsden Ward. It was love at first sight and they were married in the Manti Temple on February 24, 1950. They began their life together in Salt Lake City, then moved to Idaho, finally settling in Oregon. This is where they raised their family of six children. These were challenging times but happy ones. Her five daughters and one son were the joy of her life. She was devoted to her husband of sixty-one years and her children.

The family resided in the Pacific Northwest for forty years, taking trips to the seaside, swimming and picnicking at all the area lakes and parks, touring the cities around the state, and learning to appreciate the beauties of nature. June and the family were actively involved in their church. She was the organist in various wards for twenty-three years.

Because of their love of music, they were involved in plays, musical productions, choirs, and performances. She and Craig held various positions of leadership and were the first ones to volunteer if service was needed. June was an excellent cook and, to the delight of the children, would often invite the LDS missionaries to dinner and a rousing game of ping pong. June and Craig loved being around people, sharing what they had been blessed with.

When Craig retired, they returned to Salt Lake City in 1993. Craig passed away in 2011 and June continued to enjoy her children and grandchildren. As her health began to decline, she moved to Mapleton in 2020 to be closer to family. She endured life well, taught her children to love the Lord, serve others, and always be grateful for each day.

June is survived by her six children, Jill Bailey (Richard) of Texas, Dianne Blackett (Douglas) of Utah, Clark Rex Ward (Denise) of Utah, Pamela Potter of Utah, Marie Woolf of California, and Janet Francis (John) of Oregon. She has fifteen grandchildren and thirty-nine great-grandchildren. Survivors also include brothers, Carl Carpenter and Arthur Carpenter; and sister, Ruth Johnson.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mapleton Spring Gardens for their love and kindness to June during the last years of her life.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 200 N Street (850 East), Salt Lake City.
