Subject: Carpenter project
John,
I’m writing to find out whether there might be some connection between my family line of Carpenters and the work you’re doing at the CarpenterCousins.com website. I hesitate to dig into the gigabytes of resources you have available before we can confirm that we’re in the same gene pool, so to speak.
My initial research on my paternal line has taken me this far:
Damon Carpenter – b.1972
Jewel James Carpenter – b. Aug 20, 1943 (La.)
Samuel Jackson Carpenter – Feb. 18, 1902—Sept. 22, 1968 (La.)
Samuel Henderson Carpenter – Oct. 6, 1867—June 20, 1927 (La.)
John M. Carpenter – b. 1818 in Mississippi (???)
Burrel Samuel Carpenter – 1795—Oct. 3, 1822 (died in Connecticut) (???)
I believe this line to be correct, but I am still working on filling in the blanks. Specifically, I am trying to get hard documentary evidence linking Samuel H. to John M., documents related to John M., and anything before that regarding Burrel and his ancestry. Some information I’ve found indicates there may be a South Carolina connection to Burrel’s birth, but information is difficult to find in that era.
I’d appreciate it if you could take a look at the details above and see whether any of it shows up in your vast database you’ve compiled. If my paternal line can be found in your data, I’d be thrilled to offer a donation to the cause, contribute the DNA sample, along with the records I’ve found so far in my efforts, and any other assistance I can provide.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Damon G. Carpenter

Susan C. Toney

GENEALOGY:
See her daughter Mary Jane Carpenter's genealogy notes in her husband's notes. This describes ...
Simeon Sylvest was married to Mary Jane Carpenter about 1875. She was the daughter of John Carpenter and Susan Carpenter Toney, and the widow of John Uriah Vining.

26. Mary Jane Carpenter

GENEALOGY:  See her husban's notes. Quotes from it follow.
Simeon Sylvest was married to Mary Jane Carpenter about 1875. She was the daughter of John Carpenter and Susan Carpenter Toney, and the widow of John Uriah Vining.
...
It is believed that Mary Jane came from a family of six children. John Carpenter is said to have had two brothers and they were the sons of Samuel Christopher. Her family was to have included an older sister named Georgia Eva who was married to Walter Fountain and they had four children. A brother Preston Morgan Carpenter was married to Maggie Varnado and they had three children. Mary Jane had a sister named Charity who married a Mr. Brooks and raised a family then she had still another sister, Susan Carpenter who married Leander Stevens and raised a family in and around Amite, Louisiana.

Mary Jane was a short and rather stout woman who looked after her family well. Life was hard for her. She lost her husband rather early in life; he was 57. They had not been living North of Pearl River very long. Ten years after her husbands death and after they built their own home, in the year 1915 it burned to the ground and they lost everything. The highly valued old family Bible was destroyed. It contained her accurately kept records of life with Simeon Sylvest and their nine children. She passed away and lies buried in the oldest cemetery in this area; it is best known as the Welch Cemetery situated a mile South of the present Evans Creek Baptist Church and about a half mile East of the highway at that point. Her birth and death dates are unknown at this time. They had nine children.

Simeon Sylvest

GENEALOGY:
http://members.tripod.com/rua_sylvest/id10.html
Simeon Sylvest and Mary Jane Carpenter

III. Simeon Sylvest was born Oct. 10, 1848, probably in Washington Parish. There is evidence that his parents lived in the Pearl River area of Southeastern Louisiana and he could have been born there. He died Dec. 20, 1905 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He became ill and went to New Orleans for treatment and was buried before his brothers heard of his illness. This fact grieved Nehemiah a great deal as long as he lived. Simeon Sylvest was married to Mary Jane Carpenter about 1875. She was the daughter of John Carpenter and Susan Carpenter Toney, and the widow of John Uriah Vining. The established their first home in the Western part of Washington Parish on land acquired by Homestead from the Federal Government through the Louisiana State Land Office in Baton Rouge. The grant is officially described as the East ½ of the Southeast ¼ of Section 20, Township 3 South of Range 9 East of St. Helena Meridian in Louisiana, 121.20 acres. The property is very near Homestead, which his father acquired. After Simeon moved to Pearl River, this land was sold to a land holding company in Toledo, Ohio, according to the land conveyance records in the Tangipahoa Parish Courthouse at Amite, Louisiana.

Simeon Sylvest was one of the six signers of the Articles of Corporation of Mount Nebo Baptist Church of St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana situated several miles North and East of Amite, Louisianain what is now Tangipahoa Parish. The other five signers are George W. Addison, B.S. Carpenter, John M. Carpenter,Thos. D. Zachary and William Sanders. No date for this signing was given. This record was found in Baptist Church records for Southeastern Louisiana. In this book there was the claim that Mount Nebo Baptist Church is the oldest non-Catholic church in Louisiana outside of the city of New Orleans. The date was 1813.

Simeon was bitten by a rattlesnake while living in the Tangipahoa area. He was picking cotton in his own field and with his thirteen year old daughter at the time. He cried out with pain, but gained sufficient control of himself to get a fence rail and kill the snake before attending to himself. He used his pocket knife to cross the wound and sucked blood from it until he felt the poison diminishing. He suffered surprisingly little from this horrible experience. He and Minnie were called upon to relate this happening many times in their years that followed.

Simeon sold his holdings and moved his family to the Uncle Charles Magee place North of Pearl River, Louisiana. This was in about 1897 or 1898. John Murray, his son who was born in 1892, remembers being a six or seven year old boy when this move was made. He loved the great outdoors and gave as his reason for the move that he was going to better hunting grounds. His younger brother, John Levi Sylvest and his friend Uriah Henley were living about that time on Honey Island located between the two Pearl Rivers. Certainly, brotherly love played no small part in the move. John did not remain in this area long after his older brother Simeon arrived. He drifted further South into Florida where he settled down near Bonifay.

Minnie was thirteen years old when her father was bitten by a rattlesnake while they were picking cotton in the field together. She remembered the horror of watching him take the knife and cut his own leg until it bled and then seeing him suck the blood from the cut and spit it to the ground. Tena Parker outlived his wife by eight years and died March 12, 1959. He lays buried beside her in the Parker Cemetery. They were the parents of my maternal grandmother's mother, May Jane "Molly" Carpenter who d. 1895 and was married to William David Wilson.
Burrell, Jr.'s parents were Burrell Samuel Carpenter, Sr. and Charity Sanders but have no further info on them.
Molly's youngest brother, George Washington Carpenter, was a circuit riding Baptist preacher and for a time pastored Beulah Baptist Church near Tangipahoa, La.
