John Walter Nance

BIRTH:
The 20 Aug 1883 birth date on the 1915 marriage is the one major exception to the 28 Aug 1893 birth date which is used in 1900 and for the rest of his life, with two minor exceptions for his WWI Draft where he cites 28 Aug 1892 and his WWII Draft where is cites 28 Aug 1894!
I assume that when he was married in 1915 he was confused with another John Nance living in the same area. That was John Nance b. 29 Sep 1883 Edwardsville, Floyd, IN – d. 1 Jul 1947 New Albany, Floyd, IN.

GRAVE: images plus bio picture
Lemmon Ewing Carpenter
Birth: 18 Aug 1892 Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA
Death: 8 Oct 1971 (aged 79)
Burial: Rose Hill Cemetery, Tyler, Smith County, Texas, USA
Plot: EAST HALF OF SECTION F
Memorial #: 35418735
Bio:
ospel preacher listed in Preachers of Today, Vol. 1, 1952.

Lemon Ewing Carpenter was born near Louisville, Kentucky, on August 18, 1892. His father was Sam Carpenter, a farmer. His mother died when he was quite young and his father remarried. We have no information about his own mother, except that her given name was Nora. He left Kentucky while still a young man, and his own children never had any contact with their Kentucky relatives until late in his life. He attended the local schools as a boy, but since this period in his life was not a happy time for him, he seldom spoke of it. We do not know the religious views of his parents, but he obeyed the gospel about 1912 in Louisville and was immersed by R.C. Bell, and began preaching that same year in the Louisville vicinity. He had no brothers, and his only sister, Nellie, also obeyed the gospel. She followed him after he went "West" and became the wife of the lamented Ben M. Taylor, the great gospel singer.

In 1915 he went to Cordell, Oklahoma to attend Cordell Christian College, and continued his preaching in and near Cordell. He later attended Abilene Christian University. He became a well educated man, knew the Book well, and believed it completely. One could not hear him preach without being impressed with that fact.

As a young man he had worked for the L & N Railroad, and as he expressed it: "slung a sledge hammer". He was in good physical condition most of his life, being careful for his health, and was proud of the fact that he did have a good body, which served him well into the very last days of his life.

After leaving Cordell, he went to Dallas, Texas to preach and here he was married in 1919 to Birdie Bays. Three children were born to them. They were: Lynell, who married Dr. Jack Lewis of the Harding Graduate School, and is now deceased; Lois, who married Joe Frank Sellers, Jr., and Louise. Soon after the birth of Louise in 1923, Birdie died, leaving him with three small daughters, the youngest being a newborn infant. At this time he was preaching in Port Arthur, Texas.

On the seventh of September, 1926 he was married by Jesse P. Sewell to Earle Nelson, daughter of Clarence and Mary Ann Nelson of Mt. Calm, Texas. The Nelsons were faithful Christians, and she walked faithfully by his side to the end of his life. Four children were born to them. They are: Anna Ruth (Ann), Paul E. Carpenter, David S. Carpenter and Mary Jo, who died in infancy.

In 1919 he preached for a time in Dallas before going to Abilene for additional schooling. While in Abilene, he not only attended school, but also worked some, traveling for the school. Through the years his work was mostly what we call "local work", though he did as most preachers in those times did, held many gospel meetings, he was a very effective preacher, and in 1952, almost twenty years before his death, wrote that he had baptized more than three thousand people in many cities and in the fifteen states into which his work took him. In addition to Dallas and Port Arthur, he did local work in Houston, Corpus Christi, and Merkel, all in Texas. Then to Hollis and Mangum in Oklahoma, Childress and Dimmitt in Texas were next in his life-long work, then to Hobbs, New Mexico, back to Abilene, then to Madill, Oklahoma City, and Moore, in Oklahoma. To San Augustine, Center, Canton, Springtown, Lometa, and Tyler where he "retired", but continued to preach and taught a Bible class much of the time for the West Irwin church.

He did some debating, but we have no detailed information about this. He also did some of the first radio preaching that was done by our people, being one of several men who conducted a daily program from K.A.S.A. in Elk City, Oklahoma in the early thirties. He did this work while living in Mangum, driving the thirty or forty miles from Mangum to the Elk City studio for each of his broadcasts, since no practical way of making transcriptions was then available. In the years that followed he did such work in Amarillo, Dimmitt, and Hobbs, N.M. and spoke on many different stations as he was engaged in gospel meetings from place to place.

In 1927 he made a trip to the Holy Land and also visited in fifteen or more countries. Later, he often made talks about this trip, and exhibited different things he had bought in those lands. I became closely acquainted with him while he lived in Mangum, Oklahoma, and we had some meetings together. He was very plain and positive in his preaching, leaving no doubt whatsoever about what he was saying. I remember a story he liked to tell about being positive. The story tells of a preacher who asked an actor why people would listen to him preach, not believe it, while listening to the actor and knowing it was just an act, yet be impressed by it. The actor replied: "I act as if I really believe the lie I am telling; you preach as if you do not believe the truth you are telling." That story made an indelible impression upon him, and he surely saw to it that no one was ever left in doubt about whether or not HE believed what he was preaching.

Late in the summer of 1971 he fell and broke his arm. Complications developed and he stayed in the hospital eleven weeks until his heart finally gave out on October 8, 1971. George Stephenson, and the Tyler brethren conducted the service and in the Tyler cemetery what was mortal sleeps. At his death Sister Carpenter went to the home of her daughter, Ann, in Robertsdale, Alabama, where she remained until February, 1976, when she entered the Christian Home for the Aged in Houston. Heart trouble and other complications developed, and on September 3, 1976, she joined him in a better world. She sleeps by his side at Tyler.

The Carpenters were good people, faithful Christians, and that is the best thing that can be said of anyone. He was a good preacher, and the Church prospered where he worked. He did some writing for brotherhood papers, especially for the Firm Foundation. He published some tracts, with his best known and most widely circulated one being: Make All Things According to the Pattern. In 1959 more than fifty thousand of these had been sold. It is still in print, and still teaches a vital truth that seems to be especially needed in our time. May The Lord bless his children that remain, and may we never forget the great service rendered by such people. -- Gospel Preachers of Yesteryear.

Birth: 13 Mar 1919 Midlothian, Ellis County, Texas, USA
Death: 24 Jul 2018 (aged 99) Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, USA
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, USA
Memorial #: 191643284
Bio:
Dr. Jack P. Lewis was an American Bible scholar affiliated with the Churches of Christ. He earned a Ph.D. in New Testament from Harvard University in 1953 and a Ph.D. in Old Testament from Hebrew Union College—Jewish Institute of Religion in 1962. For 50 years, Lewis taught Bible and biblical languages, first at Harding University in Searcy, AR, and then at Harding School of Theology in Memphis, TN, where he was named professor emeritus upon his retirement. He authored over 223 articles in scholarly and church publications and published more than twenty-five books.

Lewis published an article on the Council of Jamnia in 1964, which brought him academic recognition and brought later invitations to write articles on the debate regarding that Council. He served on the Bible translation committee for the New International Version and contributed the notes to Hosea and Joel in The NIV Study Bible.

Lewis’s teaching career included nearly fifty years of teaching a course in History of the English Bible. His book on The English Bible from KJV to NIV is one of the important works on the history of the English Bible. In 2004 at the 400th anniversary of the King James Version, he was invited to present a paper on the history of the printing of the KJV. In 2016, he published The Day after Domesday: The Making of the Bishops Bible, which is a study of the Bishops Bible, the least known of the Tudor period Bibles and predecessor to the King James Version.

In 1967-68 Lewis received a fellowship grant from the American Schools of Oriental research to study as a Thayer Fellow in Jerusalem. He participated in an archaeological excavation at Aran. In 1968, he received the Twentieth Century Christian Education award in recognition of his “scholarly research, profound writing, and inspirational teaching.” He was chosen Senior Fellow at the W. F. Albright Institute for Archaeological Research in Jerusalem in 1983. He served on the editorial boards of the Restoration Quarterly and Journal of Hebraic Studies and as president of the Southern section of the Evangelical Theological Society in 1969-70.

Lewis was invited to be the commencement speaker at Hebrew Union College—Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati in 1994. At the graduation ceremonies there in 2006, Lewis was awarded a Graduate Medallion as an outstanding alumnus.

Lewis continued to speak on lectureships and in churches world-wide and served as an elder at the Church of Christ at White Station in Memphis, Tennessee, until his death in 2018.
