SUFFOLK - Irvin Carpenter Sr., 86, was called home Monday, Oct. 3, 2005. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Hampton, and had accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was born in Hampton on Oct. 26, 1918, to Samuel Tilden and Margaret Susan (Dixon) Carpenter. Throughout his years Irvin was an entrepreneur and had many interests. During his early years he was a professional boxer, who at the age of 30 sparred with the famous champion Joe Lewis. After World War II, he traveled extensively in the Asia-Pacific with the U.S. Civil Service and played the steel guitar, entertaining servicemen overseas. He also toured with the Bob Hope show during the Korean War. It was in Japan that he met his wife, Hediko Ito, who preceded him in death in 1982. Together, they had six children. He was an exceptional steel guitar player and played the steel guitar with the famous Jerry Byrd. In the late 1970's to early 1980's, Irvin played the steel guitar at the Blue Hawaii Restaurant in Hampton. As entrepreneur, Irvin had a patent for a marine clamp used in the Newport News Shipyard, was a traveling salesman for a time, raised German Shepherds, and built an extensive holding of real estate in the Tidewater area. He was a hard worker who could tell you anything you wanted to know about woodworking and construction. He passed these skills onto his sons. In his later years, Irvin loved to watch wrestling on television, and enjoyed spending time at his farms in Halifax and Suffolk. Being raised in Tidewater, he loved the Chesapeake Bay, its bounty of seafood, and being around the water. He leaves to cherish his memories, wife, Betty Carpenter of Suffolk; six sons, Irvin Carpenter Jr., of South Boston, Kenneth Carpenter and his wife, Jane, of White Marsh, Cornell A. Carpenter and his wife, Dawn, of Tabb, Andy Carpenter of Poquoson, Mark E. Carpenter and his wife, Vivian, of Williamsburg, and Mitchell S. Carpenter of Vero Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Lamar Y. Stronko and her husband, Michael, of Dover, Del. and Maryann Comer and her husband, Robert, of Hampton; three step-children, Tommy Conner and Clint Conner of Hampton, and Angel Carr of Richmond; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Obici Hospital for the loving care that was given to their father while he was in their care. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cheryl Simmons and the Rev. Thurmond Hayes Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of Central United Methodist Church, 225 Chapel Street, Hampton, VA 23669; Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1004 Yorktown Road, Yorktown, VA 23693, or Obici Hospital, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Betty Marie Carpenter, 75, returned to her heavenly home on March 27, 2018 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. Betty was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. She drew her strength from her unwavering faith in God and her immense love for her family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Peters; son, John David Conner; sister, Beverly Dobbs; grandson, Chad Thomas Conner; and husband Irvin Carpenter [married 26 Jul 1991 in Halifax Co. Va.].

She is survived by her loving daughter, Angel Carr and fiancé Brian Poe of Richmond; son, Clint Conner and wife Anita of Hampton; son, Tommy Conner and his wife – Betty’s loyal friend, Teri of Hampton. Loving grandmother to Colby and Caden Conner, Tiffany Conner of Hampton, and sweet Ava and precious Aiden Poe of Richmond.

The family will accept visitors on Saturday, March 31 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home beginning at 10:00 am with funeral services immediately following at 11:00 am.
