240. Nicholas DUPLICATE of 224174 Carpenter
BIRTH: abt 1 Jun 1792 or abt 9 Jun 1793.
I am using his gravestone marker of 83 years and 7 months at death which is listed as 1 Jan 1876 - this calculates to be born about 1 Jun 1792. The death record cites age at death as 82 years, 6 months and 22 days - this calculates as 9 June 1793.
The person who entered the Find A Grave entry gave Aug 1792 as the birth. See CONFLICT: and GRAVE: below. JRC
Per BOOK: below - born January 30, 1794, in Marseilles, France. But this location is STRONGLY SUSPECT. See below.PARENT: DISPROVED or CHALLENGED?
Assumed Nicholas Carpentier b. 16 Apr 1768. This appears genetically (per Y-DNA) the correct lineage. BUT - Is this Nicholas Carpentier the real father? See CONFLICT: and GRAVE: below. JRC
UPDATE: DISPROVED - this via Debbie Dee Duclos translations dated 22 Aug 2021.
UPDATE: CHALLENGED - this via Jason Quick who provides ...
Could the two Nicholas' be the same person? Or did Joseph become Nicolas?
Jason Quick writes:
If you look on Nosorigenes you will see that the above mentioned Nicolas Carpentier had a brother who drowned at sea. It also list him as a roofer and a baker. When you look at Nicholas Carpenter who married Hannah Libby, my last proven ancestor, there is a story about him that states his brother had drowned and that they were bakers on a ship. My hunch is that they were on an English ship and went AWOL. Possibly why Nicolas left Catherine Le Page, went South, and married Hannah Libby and moved to Vermont. He may have been on the run. I know you are more interested in proven facts then folklore but this is highly plausible.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The brother was drowned, and Nicholas left the ship on its arrival in the harbor of Quebec, making his way at once into the rural district on the southern border of the Province of Quebec. He was employed by farmers in Stanstead, and later in Derby, Vermont, and continued in that occupation all of his active life.
For a period of twenty two years he had charge of the large farms of Hon. Pontus Baxter of Derby, who was a member of Congress at the time of his death.
Mr. Carpenter purchased land and became a large landowner in Troy and Westmore, Vermont. He lived in the latter town January 5, 1878, near the close of his eighty-fourth year.
He was an extensive raiser of all kinds of farm stock, a successful farmer, and reared a large family. The maple trees which he set out are a monument to his forethought and kindness of heart.
His wife, Hannah Libby, daughter of Joshua and Hannah (Grant) Libbey, was of English descent. She died at the age of ninety one years. She was a member of the Advent Church which her husband supported.
Mr. Carpenter was a Whig and one of the first to give support to the Republican Party. He served as highway commissioner and a member of the school board, and did all in his power to advance the welfare of the community in which he lived.
His nine sons and nine daughters included two pairs of twins, one pair of whom died unnamed.
1. Joshua, the eldest, was a resident of Hatley, Province of Quebec, where he died.
2. Isaac was a resident of Derby, and died in Boston from an operation for cancer.
3. Sarah married (first) John Gates, (second) Thomas Henry, and resides in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
4. Julia is the widow of Peter Rash and lives in Barton, Vermont.
5. Charles is a resident of Fairhaven, Massachusetts.
6 and 7. John and James were twins; the former died in Lowell, Massachusetts, and the latter in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.
8. Louis lives at Concord, Vermont.
9. Edward L., see forward.
10. and 11. Harriet and Lucy died unmarried.
12. Maria Jeanette became the wife of James Matthews, and died in Westmore.
13. Jedediah died of illness contracted while a soldier in the Civil war.
14. Leslie M. is a resident of Smithfield, Rhode Island.
15 and 16. Jane and a boy, unnamed, died in infancy.COMMENT: Regarding birth place and opening info in the book cited above. JRC 25 Aug 2021
This 1908 book confirms that this is the same Nicholas Carpenter and provides detail on his wife and children. It also provides a bit of a conundrum.
Supposedly we have a Frenchman who joins his older brother on a man-of-war to learn a trade. And when this man-of-war reached Quebec he left the ship and headed south.
The problem is that any French man-of-war which is a warship would not be allowed and would be destroyed if it had tried to do so any time from 1794 to 1816. This reason was that there was a state of hostilities between England and France during that time period. And it is doubtful that any French warship arrived between 1816 and 1824 when he married.
This likely means that he jumped ship or deserted from a British man-of-war, and possibly that is when his brother drowned. They may have been “impressed” or forced to join as young as age 16, say 1808/1810 up to 1816. That he fled southward to the border with the USA is then understandable because he would have been considered a deserter and subject to arrest.
There was no real French immigration to Canada from France in the first two decades of that century. This may indicate that his birth in France is incorrect and that we should rely on his Grave marker information more than the 1908 record cited.
MORE: By Debbie Duclos
And you're right John, as far as I know about Québec history, which is a good amount, no one from France was emigrating to Canada at that point. I read the 2 pages from the old book and I very seriously doubt Nicholas was born in Marseilles, France in 1794 (during the French Revolution yet) to an English-type of father... The comes to Canada by some ship and ends up in Québec's Eastern Townships before even Québec born French folks had even been permitted to settle there? Nope I don't believe that. We Québecers were only allowed to start settling in the Eastern Townships in 1840. And the main reason we started to settle there was to be closer to the job opportunities in New England.MARRIAGE: 1824 - image

Nicholas Carpenter (184571570)
Nicholas Carpenter married "Hannah Libbey" on 9 March 1824 in Derby, Orleans County, Vermont.
Nicholas's gravestone marker provides his age as 83 years and 7 months old with his death listed as 1 Jan 1876. This calculates that his birth was about 1 Jun 1792. Others give his birth as August 1792.
His birth given by various Census records consistently indicate that he was born in Quebec, Canada.
On page 587 of the book: "Genealogical and family history of the state of New Hampshire: a record of the achievements of her people in the making of a commonwealth and the founding of a nation"; compiled by Ezra S. Stearns and published in 1908, is the following citation.
"Nicholas Carpenter was born January 30, 1794, in Marseilles, France.
Nothing is known of his parents, but it is probable that his father was English or of English stock. The name has always been spelled in its present form, as far as known, which would indicate that it is not of French origin. At an early age Nicholas Carpenter was placed with a brother in the bakery on a man-of-war, to learn the trade. The brother was drowned, and Nicholas left the ship on its arrival in the harbor of Quebec, making his way at once into the rural district on the southern border of the Province of Quebec."

NOTE: 23 April 2025 - added a death record image & marriage record with comments.
Suggested change to birth date to 1 June 1792.
Added an adjustment to the following paragraph as:
Nicholas's gravestone marker provides his age as 83 years and 7 months old with his death listed as 1 Jan 1876.
His death record indicates his age at death as 83 years, 6 months and 22 days.
This calculates that his birth was about 1 Jun 1792. Others give his birth as August 1792. I suspect this August month is from a misreading of the death record. The person listed just above on the image above died in "Aug." See image.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

4GGF - Nicholas Carpenter - 1789-1794. There is a record on Nosorigenes that Nicholas Carpentier 1789 married Catherine Le Page 1791. They had 2 children but then there are no death records. I believe that Nicholas Carpentier 1789 then married Hannah Libby and moved to Orleans, VT. Hannah was born in Stanstead, Quebec and all of the time frames line up. Nicholas father was Nicolas 1768. His father was Nicolas 1742.
NOTE: Per JRC
Several Nichols Carpenter/Carpentier found in Quebec born circa 1788 to 1795ish. One who stayed in Quebec married Catherine Le Page.COMPARE TO ...
