Notes

1. Thomas Carpenter 2nd

NOTE: This Thomas may not the son of Thomas from Long Island, NY Carpenters who descend from the Providence, RI Carpenters!!! (aka Group 2)
The father maybe from the Rehoboth, MA Carpenter line instead (aka Group 3).
We NEED a male descendant to help resolve this issue.

MARRIAGE Cert: Newport Ark to Jesse Carpenter
Marriage Cert: Searcy Ark to Thomas Garrison
Found on the l880; l900; l9l0 census of Arkansas Jackson County
Savannah was spoiled by her father and when she was in her teens was sent to a
young ladies seminary in Huntsville, Alabama. It is interesting that she was
sent to this area, as that is where her Mother family came from to Jackson
County in 1840.  later she returned to Newport and when she was but 17 she
married in Searcy on 7 July 1887 to Thomas Garrison son of the Reverand
Garrison of Newport Methodist church. No doubt she met him while visiting her
sister Nellie in Searcy as Rev. Garrison had been stationed previously in
Searcy.  From family information it is thought that the marriage was frowned
upon by the family, specially Amelia Hamilton Morris and it may have had to do
with their young ages as Tom Garrison was but 18 and was working on the
steamboat on the White River.  He later became a steamboat Captain.  It seemed
everything was done to break up this marriage.  they separated on 15 Sept 1888
and were divorced 17 July 1891.  Tom Garrison and Savannah kept in contact with
one another in later years. They had l daughter Caroline(Dubie) Garrison. It is
said by my Aunt that Savannah always loved Tom and regretted the divorce and
blamed her Mother for the event.
Savannah married 2nd Jesse Lee Carpenter in 1894. he was the son of Thomas
Bridgewater Carpenter and Tabitha Garrett of Independence Co. Ark.  Jesse was
educated and had a good position in merchandising.  He had been a teacher in
Independence Co at one time.  Savannah and Jesse were divorced in 1904 in
Newport, Ark.  Savannah lived with her father in Newport during this time.  It
was said the drinking and gambling of Jesse was to blame.
Savannah was proud of the Morris heritage and her French ancestors and was a
petite and spirited woman.  She played the piano well and I remember her
playing the song " After the Ball if Over" when she was over 80 and playing it
well.  She told many stories of her father and had great affection for him.
She told how the people of Newport called him " Uncle Billy".  Savannah left
Newport and went to Fort Smith about 1914 with Doris and Charles and later
moved to Los Angeles and then to Arizona to be with her daughter Doris in Miami
,AZ. She died 5 May 1953 in Los Angeles and is buried in Los Angeles cemetery.
