Due to many John Carpenters in and around Ulster and Sullivan Counties, the parentage is uncertain.
The following are possibilities for this John Carpenter. RIN is record information number from the Carpenter Cousins genealogical database.
1) John Carpenter-18976 b. abt 1750 of Stamford, Delaware, NY. Father is Joseph Carpenter-13142 who married a Smith.
2) John Carpenter-20266 b. abt 1752 of Orange County, NY. Father is Benjamin Carpenter-4918 who married Mary Combs.
3) John Carpenter-111585 b. abt 1754 of Chester, Orange, NY. Father is Benjamin Carpenter-2758 who is confused with BC-4918 who married Mary Combs.
4) John Carpenter-175138 b. abt 1756/1766 of, Pawling, Dutchess, NY. Father is Anthony Carpenter-175135.

NOTE:
Sullivan County, NY was created in 1809 from Ulster County, NY (original county from 1683).
Orange County was created 1683 as an original county.

REVWAR:
Reportedly made gun powder during the American Revolutionary war. THIS HAS BEEN DISPROVED.
That was Judge John J. Carpenter-13065 (1745-1800). Yet another John Carpenter!
